I don’t even know how to pronounce that without it sounding like pecan
I say pee-kan for the nut. Google says more or less the same (it would depend on one's accent of course) but for pekan it has it more like pak-an. I would have gone with pek-an (short e versus long e in pecan - although with a New Zealand accent they would sound exactly the same to an American).

Finally, a proper large zoo to increase my list

Is there any reason you call it a Pekan, out of pure curiosity? I'd never heard the name for the species before until you listed it.

Idk I've just never really liked the name "Fisher". It's such a broad sounding name and trying to specify it by saying "Fisher Cat" just sounds even more wrong! Pekan is the first indigenous name I ever heard for the species and it's unique. It's also the name the genus derives from, so all in all it just feels more appropriate to me.

I also don't like the name "Ringtail" for similar reasons (actually I feel more strongly about not calling those that name than I do the Pekan) so I generally refer to them as the Ring-Tailed Cacomistle instead. Unfortunately, I've missed my chance of seeing that species this year so I couldn't annoy you all with that name change too ;)

Out of curiosity, do they have these in their own individual enclosures or are they combined with other species?

Also where in the zoo did you see Nine-banded Armadillo?
