ZSL Whipsnade Zoo ZSL Whipsnade Zoo 2021

- they aren't breading from their chimpanzees as the dominant male has a heart condition that they don't want to pass down.

The long term plan for the chimps is to phase them out, “breed to extinction” is a term I’ve previously heard. Gelada have been a proposed replacement in the past though plans can change. Personally, I’d prefer Orang. That would go some way to rectifying the mistake ZSL made when they got rid of them from London Zoo in the early 1990s.

Afaik the chimps are 4 males and two females and only one female is still within breeding age anyway. But they are long -lived, it could be thirty years or more before they all die out. I saw somewhere that they were on a waiting list for Geladas but that was many years ago now.

why is Khari going to Chessington ?
Wouldn’t he be close to adulthood by now so to stop him breeding with the females they always move the male giraffe as soon as 1yr old.. but likely delayed because of covid. as their previous male giraffe calf is now at Yorkshire wildlife park Jengo.

I’ve often wondered what will happen once the group gets down to it’s last few individuals, particularly with the youngest male, Elvis. A relocation/reintegration to somewhere like Twycross or Monkey World perhaps? Certainly the oldest individual, former London Zoo female Koko, must be now in her advancing years?

Further to my earlier post, could a group of gorilla or bonobos work? Not that London would give up on the former or Twycross renege on it’s exclusivity with the latter of course!

I think relocation would be most likely with the youngest ones if/when they finally decide to stop keeping them. I can't ever see Gorillas or Bonobos there, I feel something like baboons(or the afore-mentioned Geladas) might be more likely. Yes, Koko is getting on rather now.

Indeed, the chimpanzee "Koko" is forty-eight years old; she was born in Dudley Zoo in 1973; she was sent to London Zoo in 1982 and transferred to Whipsnade in 2006.
They neutered and vasectomised I think. Shame that as they held troglodytes purebred chimps as it turned out.

Great to Year they might finally get back to breeding white rhino! It has been too long awhile with a zoo with a long tradition with them.

I wonder if they would create a masterplan soon as they have lost quite a few species and Numbers in recent years.

Just spoken to a colleague who works at Chessington and she gave me an update on Khari. " He is doing really well!! Settled in really nicely and the other boys have warmed to him well. Keeping us keepers on our toes but being adorable whilst doing it".

Popped in for a couple of hours in the afternoon couple of days ago, as i'm a member and so don't need to pre-book to visit after 3pm. Not much to note, however, a second blesbok has joined the female currently in the white rhino paddock. Not sure on the gender. Also worth noting that the lemur walkthrough is still closed.

Even pre-COVID this area was looking incredibly overgrown and tired. Perhaps a re-think is needed. Maybe revert it back to a non-walkthrough and build it up for gibbons? Or (blue-sky thinking!) knock it through into the chimp exhibit.

Does anyone have any more information on where the macaques will be located?

I read about the Macaques in the wild about magazine and ever since I've been to the zoo I've seen nothing in terms of areas being worked on for Macaques. Maybe the plans changed?

Before the school holidays we noted that lemurs still have access to the area but just not the public. As their local next wildlife park woeburn have reopened their lemur walkthrough but everyone has to wear mask even those exempts from masks. As they said some lemurs have tested positive for covid so it’s for their own protection …

This news makes me so happy.i was there Monday and the rhino house was blocked off was so hoping this would be the reason.
