Excellent visit at Chester yesterday - not any particular news that hasn't been covered I don't think but I thought the place overall was looking pretty impeccable (helped by the unusual situation of there being no major construction happening at the moment, albeit not really for pleasant reasons). Was a bit worried about heat-related no-shows but surprisingly little let me down (lions and tigers the most notable non-starters).

I was interested to note that I managed to see at least one completely new-to-me species of mammal (Coquerel's Sifaka), bird (White-headed Munia), reptile (Trimeresurus insularis), amphibian (Agalychnis dacnicolor), fish (Nanochromis splendens, Distichodus teugelsi, Kryptopterus macrocephalus), and invertebrate (the phasmid Marmessoidea quadriguttata) - so despite a few departures and rearrangements (and a few areas still cordoned-off) the species line up didn't feel at all depleted: I will miss the chevrotains though, and the big Tuatara enclosure (no-show in the smaller one).

Have the chevrotains left? I must have missed that.

Certainly none labelled on show and I believe they are no longer kept - the European population as a whole never really recovered from a sex imbalance in births unfortunately so is not in a good way.

Are they asking people to wear face coverings in buildings?

They are, but mask-wearing is only compulsory in the lemur walkthrough. I stuck with wearing one everywhere indoors, as did well over half of other visitors I would say. For the most part the place didn't feel overcrowded, with the possible exceptions of the usual choke points (RotRA, Giraffe House, Monsoon Forest around the gharials...). I did very deliberately do RotRA pretty much first thing as there were particular things I wanted to see there and did not want to attempt that building in the middle of the day between the people and the heat..!

A real shame if so!

Just a quick one. I'm visiting Chester on Monday but I'm not getting in until 12 which as we all know, doesn't leave nearly enough time to see everything so I'm just wondering if there is a one-way route in place. Hopefully not so I can get around to certain areas as quickly as possible. I've only visited Chester a handful of times so if anyone could give me any pointers on how to make the most of a short visit I would greatly appreciate it. Thanks in advance!

There are a few small one way paths but the majority of the zoo isn’t one way. I’d suggest either eating before and after your trip or take food that you can eat as you walk in order to save time. :)

Thanks! I think I'm going to be eating before and after my trip to leave as much time to enjoy the animals as possible.

Wondered if anyone can help. I'm planning to go to Chester zoo in the next couple of days, arriving arriving 10 to maximise the day out. With the holiday rush what's the best route to take to see everything?

When I usually go, I tend to walk around the African section first which is making my way towards Islands. Depending on what time it is, you can have a bite to eat there (I take my own food and find a picnic table). After Islands you are back in the main zoo and I head towards Cheetah bridge and do everything on that side before heading to the likes of Madagascar, Dragons, and the other corner where Tropical Realm is.

I agree with this, especially if you are the type to linger at the african aviary, so the initial rush somewhat passes.

New series of Secret life of the zoo starts next tuesday

Excellent news! I just hope this is a "new" series, as the last one was just re-edited old stories... however based on the episode description I've seen online this doesn't sound familiar. To be honest I was starting to wonder if the programme had been quietly axed as it seems ages since it was on, so it'll be good to have it back!

I'm on the zoo's mailing list and received a survey on the zoo which I've just completed - has anyone else on the forum had this/filled it in? Perhaps unsurprisingly, most of the questions were clearly aimed at the general public rather than people who actually know a lot about animals, but the few spaces that I was given to write more were used to have my say about which animals I was most interested in, the role that the TV series had in encouraging me to visit (I'm surprised this wasn't raised already to be honest!) and reasons for not visiting more often.

I visited last weekend and also filled out the survey. I agree the questioning was much more suited to the general public.

I’m not generally one to make complaints when I’m not impressed with a service but given the quality of Chester and their attention to detail throughout the zoo in it’s entirety, I do genuinely believe they are interested in feedback and self-improvement. I used the comments section to mention how much of a rip off the food is when considering the quality of it, at Mindanao Street Kitchen. That being said, the food is literally the only criticism I have of Chester, the zoo is unbelievably good!

The questionnaire did make me realise the extent of the conservation initiatives they are involved with though.

After visiting last week for only my 2nd time, I feel like I was already aware of what are considered the stand out sections of the zoo/best exhibits. But I was surprised that my favourite exhibit was by far the Fossa exhibit, I thought it was amazing and miles better than any I’ve seen before!

I feel like I’ve not seen much praise of it on ZC and wondered what others think?
