Thirty hazel dormice bred and reared at London Zoo have been reintroduced to Lancashire - it is the most northerly reintroduction of the species in Britain so far and these thirty animals include the thousandth hazel dormouse released since the UK-wide breeding programme started fifteen years ago.

London Zoo have announced that a round-eared sengi was born on 14th May - the sex is not mentioned in the announcement but the youngster has been named 'Groot'.

Eight Ethiopian mountain adders (Bitis parviocula) have recently been born at London Zoo. It is the first time this species has been bred in a European zoo.

Where are these being kept at the Zoo ?
I can't remember having seen any dormice on display.
I know they don't make for good exhibits and that they are being captive bred for reintroduction (and therefore will be kept away from view) but I would have expected that they would keep one or two on to display to showcase their conservation work in the UK.

Shame that the Snowdon Aviary is just being used for the Colobus Monkeys and not for the original purpose and that was a mixed enclosure.

True, but the fact that it’s being repurposed at all should be a relief particularly when considering what’s been lost in the last few years (Aquarium, Reptile House etc)
Don't think it's been mentioned on here yet but a small bit of good news for the zoo as two male Collared trogons join the collection from Chester - quite a rare species in Europe and a lovely addition to the zoo!
I saw one of the trogons in July.

Yes, the trogon was in the former hummingbird area in the Blackburn Pavilion.
Yes, they are 'semi off show' in the hummingbird cages but screened off so the likes of us can peer through and see them while the more general visitors walk by.
