Hello everyone

Hi all

My name is Michael Burmeister. I have always been passionate about conservation and zoos in particular! I have long believed Zoos are critical to the survival of species as it is the only way many humans will ever experience our wonderful and diverse wildlife.

I started a business Syringa Wildlife with the aim of working with zoos to supply display animals and this allowed me the opportunity to work with some amazing animals and grow my small private collection too.

I am glad this platform exists where we can meet and share knowledge as like minded individuals.

Nice to meet all of you

Michael

Hallelujah! Finally a fellow South African! Guess I'll not be the only one any more.

I presume you've worked in some way with both major collections in South Africa?
How well are you educated on the collections in Private hands?

A small Private Collection you say? Are we talking just a Game Collection as many South Africans have or full-Zoo collection?

In which Province are you situated? I know allot of the Private Zoos in South Africa and have never heard of you.

Hi there I have Proteles cristata from South Africa. I only have 1 female currently so I'm trying to get a male. I hope to breed them one day

Thanks for the reply!
How hard are they to get in South Africa (not trying to get them or anything, but just wondering given the very small population in European and American zoos)?
Any other species you are hoping to get one day?

Pleasure, they are common in the wild in South Africa, however we may not take any animal from the wild and any species kept in captivity must come from a captive source. So to answer your question they are quite difficult to getvas very few are kept in captivity here and only a few manage to breed them.

I am hoping to add a pair of Eurasian lynx later this year, next year I want to get zorilla and spotted hyena.

Eventually I'd like to have a small zoo, I believe that education is critical for conservation and people only care about what they see and interact with.

I agree, we may only take animals from the wild as a last resort (incase only a handfull remain and captive breeding is the only way to safe this species). Aren't aardwolfs also difficult to take care off, because of their diet?
What about aardvarks?

While there are other ways to educate people about animals, I also believe that seeing animals in person is a powerfull way of showing people the importance of conservation.
