ZooChat Challenge North America 2021

Out of curiosity, do they have these in their own individual enclosures or are they combined with other species?

Also where in the zoo did you see Nine-banded Armadillo?
It’s a mixed exhibit with those two species but no others.

The armadillo was in Kingdoms of the Night in a mixed exhibit with Red-rumped Agouti, Southern Three-banded Armadillo, douroucouli, Screaming Hairy Armadillo, and Prehensile-tailed Porcupine.

Are we counting domestic Reindeer?

Caribou/Reindeer: Someone asked me in private what the deal is with domestic reindeer versus wild caribou. While the rules state that domestics do not count and wild animals do count, I wouldn't trust myself to tell the two apart without prior knowledge of who holds them; therefore, I won't expect any of you to do so either. For that reason, here's what we're gonna do: if you see caribou/reindeer in a regular non-farm enclosure and not doing obviously domestic reindeer things (giving rides, being advertised for rides, being touched by guests, or having any riding or handling gear on), then you can count them. If you do see any of that or they are not in a regular non-farm enclosure, then they do not count. For now I think this is a good compromise, but open to other ideas.

The AZA population of squirrels monkeys hails from Guyana and the only other (dwindling) population around is from Peru. Neither species fits the criteria for this challenge.

Also, where'd you see the bottlenose dolphins?

~Thylo
Well I’m on vacation in Mexico and we booked this nice private island (which wasn’t even an island to my dismay), and it just so happened the place to board the boats had Dolphins, the island (just a private beach) had a zoo I hadn’t read about with ring tailed lemurs, squirrel monkeys, American Flamingos, and possibly hundreds of macaws. On another part of the beach they had southern stingrays, bay rays, and South American sea lions. All animals were in substandard conditions, especially the sea lions with a tiny pool, although the keepers did take them out sometimes to swim in the ocean. Overall a very strange place.

Can you find out where this place is that you saw dolphins and/or what the name of it is? I need to confirm whether the facility counts and I'm not familiar enough with Mexico to know offhand. You can send it via PM if you prefer; also doesn't have to be now, you can wait until you're back in the States. Were they in an enclosure of some kind?

If it's a publicly accessible zoo then animals from there should be countable, however the previous responders are correct in that no squirrel monkeys qualify for this challenge. The only primates that can be counted are:

- Geoffroy's Spider Monkey, Ateles geoffroyi
- Mantled Howler, Alouatta palliata
- Guatemalan Black Howler, Alouatta pigra

So the company is Vallarta Adventures in Puerto Vallarta, don’t bother checking the zoo chat maps as they don’t include the other two zoological facilities in the area. The Dolphins were at the main facility and can be seen by the public with no pay, the other facility you have to pay for and take a boat to get there.

@Westcoastperson Thanks, I was able to find and confirm the place just fine with that name. I might need to do some thinking and confer with previous game moderators about whether a facility like that qualifies as a "public zoological collection" as stand-alone dolphin encounter companies don't generally operate the same way as a zoo or aquarium does. I'll let you know when I make a determination on that.

Based on your description of the other facility it should count, but if you do visit you'll have to confirm for me what that specific place is so I can be certain.
