Asian Elephants in Europe 2021

Apperantly Faya at Rotterdam is pregnant! Considering the time taken to confirm a females actually pregnant, the latest due date would be March of 2023, and quite possibly sooner than that. Sire is Fahim.

Where did you receive this information? Havent see any post from Blijdorp about this potentially amazing news.
It is now also confirmed by Blijdorp/Rotterdam zoo. In the last episode of 'Het echte leven in de dierentuin' (The Dutch version of 'The secret life of the Zoo') it is said that Faya is pregnant, and will give birth in a little less then two years.

What of Trong Nhi and Nhi Linh are they also pregnant

It turns out that the Kharkov zoo in Ukraine has renovated their elephant exhibit

“Our giant elephants Aun and Tendi are step by step mastering their new summer enclosure, part of a complex called ′′ The Kingdom of Elephants ". The area of possessions is significant-1412 m2. The walls of the enclosure are decorated with sculptural concrete, and there are huge stones on the sand floor - boulders , feeders are both in the walls and on the trunks of trees. The same trunks also perform the function of scales. Because elephants like to hear about strong trees. If elephants can hide from the rain or just be in the shade, the enclosure has a sunscreen with a reed roof.”

“So far, both Aun and Tendi are being treated with caution, exploring everything with a hobot. To make the adaptation more comfortable, cyperi encourage walks in the Kingdom with the help of goodies - fragrant hay, vegetables and fruits.”

“Watching elephants in this enclosure will be able to panoramic from the flyover and literally feel part of the wildlife. Because thanks to the use of electrical, rovív system and reservoirs as natural obstacles, the new complex provides minimum barriers.”

That’s a big improvement.
If they move to a bachelor herd it would be great they can take the surplus bulls from Emmen and maybe Cologne/Koln.

Aung naing lay is still somewhat genetically valuable as hes yu zin’s only live calf and I don’t believe she’s breeding at woburn.

I think Kharkov zoo could welcome Horas, and Bunka. These three bulls share on thing in common they all live alone and without the company of other elephants. But if Kharkov zoo still want to have a breeding herd I think the best option would be to move La Petite her daughter's La Bell, Lelana , her son Pele, and her granddaughter Latangi to Kharkov to mate with Aun Naing Lay, while Ramat gan can welcome Yoma (Unknown if he will be heading to Lodz) , and Warda's two daughters Wered and Lola who are in dire need of having a calf Lola has never had a calf while Wered has had 2 daughter's but sadly they did not survive.

And the barn is one of the best I have seen Aung Naing Lay -> Petra Prager – elefanten-fotolexikon.eu

can someone please translate? Thank you.

“It was clear to everyone that it had to happen one day. The fact that Jenny the elephant has to stay alone in the old age residence of the zoo is a rather sad picture.

After Nanda had to be put to sleep last Wednesday, it was of course hard to get back to normal. Zoo director Matthias Reinschmidt would like a new elephant cow to move into the enclosure as soon as possible.

The zoo director further explained that nothing is broken over the knee, that a new elephant does not have to be found immediately.

He reckons that a new elephant will move into the zoo in autumn. However, this lady will no longer be young.”
Not perfect translation, sorry

thank you. I can get the gist of it. I am sure they wouldn’t have a problem finding another older cow or two. There seems to be a surplus of them if other zoos are willing to part with them. Or even over represented (genetically) younger cows.

I would agree with you, there are certainly plenty of cows in the European program that could come to their exhibit.

There definitely are plenty of candidates. I just hope that they really help the EEP and don't pick another circus elephant.

why would you say that? I would think any older cow would do.

Annie at longleat could use an elephant companion. And she was a circus elephant. Goats are nice but not like another elephant. I don’t know why this zoo is looking for a second elephant cow.
