Thanks very much for compiling this extensive list. :)

It's interesting to see that only 4 zoos have more than 3 hippos, even though they are social animals that live in huge gatherings in the wild. Cheyenne Mountain has a youngster to give that zoo 4 hippos, Memphis is in the same category, Fort Worth has 4 and that leaves Disney's Animal Kingdom as the only zoo in North America with an actual 'herd' of hippos. It's also fascinating to see that there are 6 zoos with only a solitary hippo.

Hippos are very common in Mexican zoos. The list above is very incomplete. There are also hippos at these zoos, Zacango, Neza, Irapuato, Querétaro, Monterrey, Chetumal, Zoofari _ Morelos, Córdoba, Yumka, Puerto Vallarta, Centenario zoo and Animaya zoos in Yucatán. Hippos breed very well in Mexican zoos. The only zoo with Pygmy hippos in Mexico is Morelia zoo which also has common hippos. Only GUADALAJARA AND San Juan Aragon have exhibits with underwater viewing. The largest herd of common hippos is at Africam Safari Puebla. The worst exhibit for hippos in Mexico is Puerto Vallarta.

It would be helpful to have a breakdown in Numbers.

Still two

Sedgwick has - to no one's surprise - two females! Sweetie Pie and Pudgie are the names of their resident females. I do not know how old Pudgie is, but Sweetie Pie was born in 1971, so she will be turning 50 soon.

San Francisco's 1.0 Bruce is moving to another facility to breed in early September -- https://www.instagram.com/p/CTC-c_hvuyg/

They seem to imply that he's going to breed with one female -- Cincinnati possibly?

Also, I can't thank you enough for compiling this list and sharing it here! I have honestly been under the impression for many years that hippos were a lot more common in the US than they actually are. I look forward to learning more :)

Considering Cincinnati is already at capacity, and there is no way they will be sending away Fiona any time soon, I am highly doubtful that will happen.
Where has the capacity of their exhibit been published (if you don't mind sharing)? Cincinnati did express intentions to acquire another hippo after Henry died

San Francisco also stated that they won't be acquiring another hippo at this time and that plans for Bruce's exhibit are yet to be determined

I've heard multiple times that the exhibit at Cincinnati can only accommodate two hippos. Apparently between the time when Fiona was born and Henry died they were actually violating AZA guidelines by keeping three individuals in the exhibit. @ThylacineAlive would know more about this then I do so he's probably better equipped to answer, but I will reiterate that I am very doubtful that Bruce will go to Cinci.

I don't mean to doubt you at all, I'm only very shocked that they would construct an exhibit as recently at 2016 that didn't allow them to meet AZA minimum guidelines for their bloat! They've also always expressed intentions to breed in the new habitat, which is another confusing element that would automatically place them outside of AZA guidelines as you said. Would the AZA place animals into a breeding situation at a facility that didn't have the capacity for such activities?

Regardless, I'm very eager to see where he does end up :)

According to this article:
The long goodbye: Suisun City boy will visit hippo before it leaves SF Zoo
Bruce is headed to Cincinnati to mate with Bibi. So I’m guessing Cincinnati has room for at least four individuals; unless they’re sending away Fiona?
Well, time to insert foot into mouth.

That is genuinely shocking that Cincinnati is preparing to hold up to four individuals! From what I was aware I thought two was all that was allowed by the AZA. That exhibit is incredibly tiny and I don’t know how this will work out in the long run.

Tbh I agree with everything you’ve said. I still question as to whether this article is correct, but I won’t doubt until San Francisco gives reason to.

Does anyone know where Lilly and Lupe at woodland park are going? Their move was announced almost a year and a half ago, but I don’t remember a facility ever being specified. Especially with one of the move reasons being that Lupe was recommended to breed, does anyone know of any facilities or bulls that could welcome the girls?
