Edinburgh Zoo Edinburgh Zoo News 2021

Three male Przewalski’s horses have safely arrived at the Royal Zoological Society of Scotland’s (RZSS) Edinburgh Zoo yesterday, Friday 27 August.

The wildlife conservation charity has a successful history with the endangered species at Highland Wildlife Park, near Aviemore, where the small bachelor herd have travelled from:

Ah that's cool, I didn't realise any other British zoo besides Welsh Mountain had that species. That'll be another rare one crossed off my zoo bucket list.

To be precise, the other UK holders are Highland WP, Manor WP, Marwell, Port Lympne, Whipsnade and Woburn.

Thats brilliant news as alot of people can't get up to HWP to see them up there.

Couple of updates from the zoo:

  • One of the female chimps has had a stillborn baby and has been carrying it around the enclosure, perfectly naturally but not the nicest to see
  • The zoo's pair of Cape Porcupine have a Porcupette
Has budongo been closed as a result?

Giant Panda Update:

"After we shared news about Tian Tian’s annual health check and artificial insemination in April, our female giant panda showed really positive behaviour right through the breeding season.

While we now know the insemination was not successful, it has been fantastic to see how wonderful and relaxed Tian Tian has been this year which shows an incredible level of care from our charity’s expert teams. Giving Tian Tian the chance to experience pregnancy and parenthood is important for her wellbeing and provides a vital opportunity to express natural behaviours

Giant panda breeding is an amazingly complex, unpredictable process and every cycle has made it possible to carry out scientific research which has benefitted both Tian Tian and international efforts to protect the species over the past decade.

We remain in discussions with our colleagues in China about Yang Guang and Tian Tian’s future at Edinburgh Zoo as our original ten year agreement ends in December – we still hope to extend their stay and I will keep you all updated."

I hope they make the right decision and send them back to China, I am really struggling to see the benefits of keeping them.

Do you mean send them back and convert their new enclosure for another species?

They still have the old enclosure sitting fallow and unused, and blocked off from the public in the usual "shrinkflation" attempt to hide how much the collection has lost lately!

It was my understanding that the pandas would be leaving after this year anyway, their lease from the breeding centre was for a maximum of ten years and started in 2011, unless the deal has changed since then?

See the quote upthread posted by @Quincey indicating that Edinburgh want to extend the lease for another ten-year period:

....which is the quote which prompted this discussion in the first place :P

I know the plan for the old panda enclosure is to convert it for sun bears, who would benefit from individual enclosures if they wish to breed them. Then the drill replacing the sun bears in their current enclosure. The new panda enclosure could be converted easily into a large, interactive meerkat enclosure if they wanted.
