Meerkats have returned to Honolulu with the arrival of three males from Toledo. They’ll go on display in March.

A Linnaeus's two-toed sloth was born March 7:
Honolulu Zoo welcomes a new baby sloth
It is the fifth baby sloth to be born at the zoo to parents Harriet and Quando.
Zookeepers said the 7-year-old mother and 18-year-old father are a match made in heaven and are considered a genetically valuable pair.
The young sloth will join a large family, including its siblings Opihi, Akala, Tommi and Lolohi.
Currently, Opihi and Lolohi share an exhibit at the Honolulu Zoo with the two golden lion tamarins, near the front of the zoo. Tommi and Akala have been shipped to other zoos, and Akala resides at Panaewa Zoo in Hilo and has two offspring of her own.

Today the zoo had announced that they had bid aloha to “Pua” the female Common warthog after she died of complications associated with her age. She was 13 years old when she passed, and is now survived by her companion, a male warthog a year younger than her named and known by all as “Lenny”.

The Honolulu Zoo announced Thursday that Roscoe, a 48-year-old chimpanzee, was euthanized due to complications associated with age.
Roscoe, along with six other chimpanzees, came to the Honolulu Zoo from the Saint Louis Zoo in 1994.
He fathered two chimpanzees, Hugo and Konakona, in Saint Louis and four chimps at the Honolulu Zoo - Tatu, Kibale, Kealoha, and Nalu.

One of the meerkats that arrived earlier this year, Raphael, has died after a tunnel collapsed around him. The exhibit remains closed and the other two meerkats off display until the exhibit is inspected, modified, and deemed safe again.

- Liko (budding leaf, newly opened leaf)
- Mālie (calm and tranquil)
- Pono (goodness, prosperity)
Regarding the meerkat: Munich lost all 4 of theirs in similar circumstances. I'd never heard of it happening before, but now twice in the same month. I hope other zoos holding them review their enclosures.

Last week the zoo received Petunia, a female African Pygmy hedgehog through the Hawai‘i State Department of Agriculture’s amnesty program.
On the 8th of December a nene/Hawaiian goose (Branta sandvicensis) hatched.

True as would closer cooperation 3-way Asia-Australasia-Europe with Hawaii and what is left of the sun bear SSP and still able to reproduce elsewhere.
On subject pachyderm: female rhino Satsuki has passed away at age 26, she was captive-born in Hiroshima Zoo (and had no Statewise representation). What a loss and so so so, sad the pairing with male Corky never got under way. I really do think a change of heart on keeping black rhinos in Honolulu is at hand. Perhaps they need to look at either white or Indian and send the bull Corky to the continent as he is yet able to breed.
