Black Rhino Transfer/Breeding Plans

Potter Park Zoo's rare black rhino calf, Jaali, will be leaving Lansing this fall for a new home.

Jaali was born at the zoo in December 2019. He was the first black rhino calf born there in the zoo's 100-year history. Black rhino births in captivity are relatively rare, the zoo said when Jaali was born.

Jaali has been paired with a female rhino to breed with at his new facility.

Jaali’s parents, Doppsee and Phineus, met in October 2017. Doppsee's pregnancy was confirmed in spring 2019 and Jaali was born later that year. The two will now try for a second calf.

Went to Potter Park today, photos coming later.

As of now:

-Camels are gone; their exhibit is now occupied by their kangaroos.
-Tufted deer now live in the former kangaroo enclosure.
-Emu now live in the former tufted deer enclosure.
-Former mandrill exhibit is now occupied by Black-headed spider monkeys.
-Former spider monkey exhibit is now occupied by Ring-tailed lemurs.
-Former North American porcupine exhibit now holds a Trumpeter hornbill (the big cage inside the Feline/Primate building also holds trumpeter hornbill).
-Sulcata tortoise has been moved to the mara enclosure near the budgie encounter area they have (crimson rosellas and cockatiels still with the budgies).
-Painted turtle, American toad and tree frog displays now gone in the Bird/Small mammal/reptile house. As we know, indoor exhibits sort of change inside so I'm not going to point out all the changes inside since my last visit around 2019 (former golden lion tamarin area now holds a coendou, but Green aracaris still reside).
-Concerning enclosure contains at least four Henkel's leaf-tailed gecko and around at least three Giant day geckos (I don't think this will end very well)...
-As we know, former moose habitat now holds a breeding herd of elk/wapiti.
-Former Barred owl exhibit now holds a blind Broad-winged hawk; assuming barred owl is off-display.
-River otters are off-exhibit for habitat renovations.
