North American Common Hippopotamus Population

If this is an SSP recommendation, then the AZA is clearly ok with the move even without Fiona moving. Unless the plan is contingent on moving Fiona that the zoo has not announced yet. Either way, even though the TAG recommends that new facilities should hold 4-8 individuals min, AZA is ok with using Cincinnati as a breeding facility. I'm assuming because Bibi is an experienced mother now and the staff at the zoo are clearly experienced with breeding hippos.

Does anyone know where Lilly and Lupe at woodland park are going? Their move was announced almost a year and a half ago, but I don’t remember a facility ever being specified. Especially with one of the move reasons being that Lupe was recommended to breed, does anyone know of any facilities or bulls that could welcome the girls?
Lupe was supposed to go to ABQ Biopark to be paired with 47-year-old Moe, but with the recent unexpected birth from their contracepted 19-year-old female Karen I'm not sure if that's being put on hold or otherwise changed

I haven't seen anything about Lily's destination :(

Thank you! I hope things still go according to plan. But who knows.

I heard back from Disney yesterday!

"Currently, there are seven females and three males in the Safi River:

Panchita (F) is 23
Mezcal (F)is 27
Hans(M) is 20
Henry (M)is 26
Nacho (M) is 23
Tequila (F) is almost 29
Ramona (F) is 23.
Viviana, our oldest lady, is 46
Tuma (F) is almost 25 and just gave birth to Greta (F), who is just over one month!"

As a side note, this is definitely one of the most pleasant email interactions I've ever had with a zoological facility :D I'm used to zoos responding to inquiries with varying degrees of wariness and giving as little information as they can get by with, if they even respond at all -- this team member was enthusiastic from the start and kept me updated along the way as she retrieved the information for me. She even tried to include a picture of mom Tuma and baby Greta which unfortunately didn't make it across, but I loved the excitement! Now that's an idea for a thread, rate each zoo's public relations teams :p

I was surprised by the sudden name change. I don't see why they felt it was necessary to change his name. It must be confusing for the studbook keepers.
I had the exact same thought as you at first, but on Cincinnati's website they said that Tucker was the name given to him at birth, and he was called Bruce Bochy later on after the San Francisco Giants baseball player/manager :)

Facilities that in theory could have housed large pods of Hippo are as follows:

White Oak Conservation
Rum Creek aka Center for Conservation of Tropical Ungulates (CCTU)
Fossil Rim Conservation
San Diego Zoo Safari Park
North Carolina Zoo
African Lion Safari

Facilities that could possibly hold decent sized Hippo pod are as follows:

Columbus Zoo
Zoo Atlanta
Nashville Zoo

I would love to see African Lion Safari take on hippos, If they are willing to take on the care of elephants in a mediocre barn then they can handle hippos, plus they have lots of empty land so they could build a huge water source for the hippos, It will not be Cheyenne Mountain Zoo quality for sure but they could holds lots of them. Possibly a bull and at least 5-7 breeding females plus calves as they are surrounded by undeveloped land.

Rosie the hippo is moving from the Los Angeles Zoo to Disney's Animal Kingdom on a breeding recommendation!

I found a lot of new information on the US hippo population yesterday that I'll share as soon as I have the time. I really want to get my hands on the studbook...

Edit: This may have been known by others besides me, but I just found this really great site!! Startseite

VERY excited about this, I was just thinking a day or two ago that I wished a hippo database existed!

Using the information from that website, the list I made for Common Hippopotamus has been updated! I'll post it within the next few weeks.

One thing I'm confused about is that according to the Saint Louis Zoo, Bibi (Cincinnati Zoo) and Tombi (Saint Louis Zoo) are sisters. But according to Hipposworld (which I assume likely got the majority of their data from studbooks), Bibi's parents are Rosie and Henry while Tombi's parents are Viviana and Norman. Cincinnati has also in the past confirmed Bibi's father to be Henry, and since the girls were born a month apart, it's fairly safe to assume it's a father they share (if they are actually sisters)

I'm also very curious about Louisiana Purchase Zoo's hippo, Monreaux. He was born in Poland (possibly Wroclaw...?) on November 17th, 2012, but no animal with that birth date is listed on Hipposworld... I'd like to know his original name prior to import and the names of his parents, if possible.

I'll try reaching out to all of the aforementioned facilities for more info and update here (unless any of our fine members know about any of this, of course!!)
