Antelope in zoos.

While I'd agree that the public don't know that they are interested in seeing antelope - herds of ungulates do not draw the public as gorillas or elephants do - once a mjor zoo stops exhibiting such animals, the public WILL notice their absence. They may not know thier addax from their eland, but they apprecaite seeing 'stuff'.

Interesting that Newquay Zoo (UK) is currently constructing an exhibit for wildebeest, nyala, zebra, waterbick, lechwe and warthog. Not sure if all of these will be mixed together - quite an ambitious undertaking if so.
 
And ostrich. Not sure whether they'd get on with the warthogs, likewise how they plan to mix Visayan Warty Pigs with Phillipine Spotted Deer.

That's true, because I read an article where the curator of mammals at the LA zoo said that they will try to mix the steenbok in with the giant eland just because the steenbok couldn't hold an exhibit by themselves.

I don`t think they are mixing them it doesn`t realy say if they are or not on the website,personaly i think they wont because if something happens to 1 of the animals somebody has got some explaining to do.Also say that they are keeping Fishing Cats in the area now that would be a mixed exhibit.
 
Wondering if has anyone seen the grasslands exhibit at North Carolina?

The one good thing about antelope on displlay is that they are rarely in bad exhibits (just from what I know).
But they are not spectular like Congo at Bronx zoo. Though I would say there is one.T he San Deigo Wild Animal Park is jaw-dropping of which the Photo Carvan ride makes it even more amazing. At the least most are average side at the worst. The worst antelope pens are those sickening "footall stadium" exhibits of San Antonio. Let me know if agree.
If you are not from the U.S I would be very inrested to see feel the same about your antelope exhibits. I know that Marwell's is great in displaying antelope.

I've seen the grasslands exhibit in North Carolina and was very impressed!

I love the antelope species; some of my favorite animals at the Toronto Zoo are the Kudu, Sable Antelope and the Impala. :) I too would like to see them being exhibited more, I find it a shame to see so many ungulate species being phased out in zoos.

Newquay is a good little Zoo with an increasing collection of unusual species. I think in their case the addition of these Antelopes into a mixed exhibit will give this zoo- which is never going to display elephants or rhinos(?)- a display of larger mammals to balance up the collection a bit. They have had common Zebra and Lechwe mixed for a long while but those used to be the only larger hoofedstock so this will be a step further.

Anyone know when the new exhibit will open?
 
Easter for the African Plains, coincidentally the same time Marwell completes the first phase of it's African Valley.
 
Based on current gate links, zebra, gemsbok, roan antelope and ostrich. More antelope, giraffe and possibly the white rhino will join as time goes on.

Where did you get pening date for Newquay Zoos African Plains because i`ve just looked on every page on the website and can find no date given apart from OPENING 2009!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
 
After sitatunga mentioned Dibatag (Ammodorcas clarkei) in another thread I was wondering if Dibatag have ever been exhibited in zoos before?
 
Heck, I've been wondering if dibatag have ever been photographed before.
 
there's a photo of one on Al Wabra's site. Al Wabra has plans underway to establish a captive population (they have none at the moment though). The species has been kept at several institutions in the past, especially at Naples. Apparently there is currently one captive individual in Eritrea (possibly others in private collections)

Naples was the only zoo in the past with dibatag. The dibatag project of Al Wabra is gonna be dead, because they can't get the animals. All attempts getting dibatag failed.Some Diabtag can be seen at the Field Museum Chicago.
