Visited recently , a couple things to note :
  • Barasingha herd has had 3 new babies from the new buck. Unsure of genders this early but all 3 are healthy.
  • Both white lions and tigers are going to phased out. White lion pride consists of one male and his 3 breeding females and the rest are his daughters . There's 3 remaining white tiger boys.
  • Both white rhino calves are happy and running around, now a major push to begin construction of rhino lodges by next week to properly accommodate the crash of 8
  • Five (the remaining elephant cow) was mourning the loss of Latabe but is now back to a happy condition. Keepers are still entering the enclosure to keep her company. Never seen her run across her enclosure to the pool before and grazing the overgrown embankments ! No official plans for cow imports yet and Sutton is still staying for a while.
  • Waterbuck herd has shrunk to 1.1 due to age related deaths and export of previous calves. Blackbuck are at 53 females. Some Anoa have left for chester zoo, now 3 females left. Still cape buffalo in the enclosure. 4 ankole cows remain after age related deaths.
  • Red panda enclosure is great ! Climbing enrichment and painting is beautifully laid out. Unfortunately didn't see her outside.
Overall great day out, wildlife phase 2 now waiting approval (giraffes, ungulates and rhinos) while tigers is being planned out.

Cape buffalo are in the usual pit behind the new cheetahs enclosure or a coupe units next to the giraffe house. Now 2 buffalo left . Yes the boys are All separated. There's an offshow enclosure on the back of the tiger house, You can see it from Google maps. So each male has his own enclosure.

The male and his 2 mates are quite old now and are becoming slow but his daughters are still very active , saw them with a carcass and then playing around the pool.

Visited today and had a very pleasant day (despite the driving route in particular being (expectedly) busy). The new elephant paddocks are a great improvement (if a little understocked currently). The Red Panda enclosure... is a Red Panda enclosure. It's fine.

One very nice new arrival I've not seen mentioned here is White-spotted Reed Frog (Heterixalus alboguttatus) in the Reptile House - along with Chinese Crocodile Lizard and Golden Mantella.

What's going on with the reptile house at WMSP currently? In April we were told that it is planned to be demolished and that most of the large reptiles had already left the collection, yet we now know they've been adding new species to it.

All the croc side is still boarded up, so the only 'properly' big display is the big snakes still. But the quality of the smaller species has definitely improved - which would seem to suggest some kind of long-term plan with herps (possibly not in this building though).

Very strange. I still don't understand why they feel they need to demolish the reptile house though - there's nothing wrong with it.

Is Mark O'Shea still affiliated with WMSP? Have the crocs left because he owned them perhaps?

To be fair, there could be all sorts of things very wrong with it that we can't see. Or they just want something better?

I don't believe he is - not sure if that's directly linked to the crocs or not.

I suppose that's quite likely as the building must be at least 30 years old. Whatever happens I just hope the park decides to continue with a dedicated herp house of sorts, as I've always considered their current one as one of the best in the UK.

Be interesting to see if this includes a way to view the currently-inaccessible Cape Buffalo..!
 
A big question to ask now in fact What does everyone think about the new pathways to see the elephants and giraffes ? bintarong if you are going there next would you please get the photos of us to see even though because of the construction site no one is allowed in except staff and keepers. Don't worry if you can't but I can well understand

Sorry about the post. it's supposed to be said for us to see not of us to see. Here's a new one. Now then about 2 months ago there were talks about Pelicans coming to WMSP but question is what species of pelicans are they thinking about getting ?

That was the previous elephant valley plan submitted before the lopping group sale. That plan is of course scrapped along with pelican pool
