ZSL Whipsnade Zoo ZSL Whipsnade Zoo 2021

I was in the new aquarium yesterday and although very small, I love the idea of mixed enclosures with reptiles, along with the Crocodile Lizard and Panther Chameleon, there is now a gecko in another exhibit and also a green tree python in another, which looks absolutely stunning. Not long ago at London Zoo in the Reptile House there was a Mangrove Snake that also looked stunning and sadly has disappeared, I would say this snake would look great in the collection in Whipsinade, especially if they replicated an actual mangrove with the fish that come from there.

I too thought that the sitatunga looked very nice in the bongo paddock. It's interesting to note, though, that bongo X sitatunga hybrids have been born at Antwerp Zoo....

(I also agree with you that Whipsnade is a lovely place to visit in the early autumn.)

Oh really? Perhaps it's not a breeding group of sitatunga? Would that be a Sitabongo or Bongatunga?

Gnusletter (the journal of the IUCN/SSC Antelope Specialist Group) refers to a bongo X sitatunga hybrid, born in Fasano Safari Park, as a "bongsi".

The original Antwerp Zoo bongo x sitatunga hybrids (born 31st October 1963 and 4th February 1965) are documented in the 8th volume of International Zoo Yearbook (1968).

Really hope you enjoy! It's my favourite zoo :) All the main carnivores are on the map, so hopefully you won't miss anything!

hope you have a brilliant time and I would suggest head over to the elephants where you find Ming Jung the bull in the bull paddock. For Carnivores it's lions, tigers, cheetahs, bears, lynx and African Painted Dogs
 
Had a very enjoyable visit today, wow its hudge! But I couldnt help but think that the zoo isnt quite up to the standard it would of been in the past with a lot of empty houses and abandoned enclosures made it seem a little depressing in places. Some of the enclosures were brilliant I really liked the big cat enclosures and the chimp island. The penguins were also very good.

I spoke to a volunteer who said that the Asian section is going to be revamped over the next few years so it seems as though they will be going in a good direction.

overall really enjoyed it and would go back again!

I'm glad you really enjoyed it :) Being a largely outside collection, Whipsnade doesn't always look it's absolute best on a damp autumn/winter day. I think In general it's been a really tough time for zoos so I'm sure in a few times all zoos will be much better off!

Interesting to hear about the Asia section being revamped, will be really interested to see what happens!

I also loved the hippos aswell! Its great to see a collection with both species of hippos and to see a sloth bear was great aswell!

I did wonder about wether the gorillas at london would do a lot better of a whipsnade? Surely london could replace them with a troop of mandrills?
 
I'm sure they could give the London gorillas a premium enclosure but given the various tragedies that group has had in recent years, would you want to risk moving them?

And, given the microclimate Whipsnade has, would you even see them outdoors?

Does anyone know what the situation is with regards to the lions? I spotted 4 in total and I believe there were some castrated males as well.

As far as I know it is the Cubs 3 males all castrated and 1 females .. and your right until they die out they aren’t doing anything with them
