My favorite wild canid is the dhole. They’re beautiful and very impressive hunters, and very few people know about them. Though pretty much restricted to Southeast Asia today, they were nearly as widely distributed as wolves during the Pleistocene epoch, with fossils being found in Europe and as far down North America as Mexico. Sadly, this is now a highly endangered animal, with fewer than 2,500 thought to remain in the wild.
 
My favourite canid species is the African wild dog. They’re unique in appearance and colouration and they lead such fascinating lives. Several New Zealand zoos have held them in recent decades and I’ve enjoyed reading research studies on their behaviour and social systems.

Husbandry, particular with regards to reproduction and reading of pups is a relatively novel science to our zoos and there has been much learning through trial and error.

The packs held in captivity in New Zealand’s zoos have rarely reached double figures. It’d be amazing to see a pack of 30-40 dogs in the wild.

My favorite is the wolf, all subspecies, from the red wolf to the Arctic wolf and from the European wolf to the Newfoundland wolf, to a lesser extent also wild dogs like dingoes and also common dogs, mainly for their behavior. At 2, and almost equal to the wolf is the African wild dog as my favorite canid. Especially its hunting strategy and endurance just amaze me:eek:.

Depending on who you ask the Dingo and Domestic Dog are still subspecies of Canis lupus.

My favourite would also be the African Wild Dog (or the Painted Dog).

They have a beautiful appearance, and I also love their very intriguing behaviour and intuitive hunting abilities. They're quite a fascinating species overall.
 
African wild dog. They're beautiful, have cute ears, yet viciously kill their prey and eat it alive. They also live in a unique pack structure in which the youngest ones eat first.
 
I tend to go towards more rare and unusual species generally so would probably pick the Maned Wolf and Bush Dog as my joint favourites. Also the Tibetan Fox which I hope to see one day.
 
I think for me it is either African painted dog or bush dog... Maned wolf is close.

Looking at the rest of the thread, it seems my opinions are not that special :p:eek:
 
Painted dogs and maned wolf are my top two condensers. Their colors are so great, especially with the painted dog and the maned wolf is just so unique looking. Dhole is a close third.
