Dudley Zoological Gardens Dudley Zoo News 2021

I'm thinking about visiting Dudley Zoo next Summer, the last time I went was in 2013, but I don't remember a huge amount from my last visit other than the chairlift that goes over the gelada enclosure, and feeling sad for a black bear in an old style "pit" enclosure that people were throwing food down into (I distinctly reember the bear sniffing a whole slice of bread that someone threw in). Despite that somewhat bad memory, I am interested in checking out this zoo again.

The zoo is great. There are so many new developments and species that have arrived since 2013 and it's such a fantastic place to be. I'd highly recommend a visit and I'm sure you'd get a very pleasant surprise if you do.

I'm planning on visiting Dudley very soon and I would like to know what restrictions are still in place. I know some indoor areas have reopened but does this include the giraffe and chimp houses? Thanks in advance

As far as I know all of the visitor accessible buildings should be open, including things like the giraffe and chimp houses, primate house, reptile house etc, which is based on my own visit back in July, so assuming no new restrictions have been put in place (which is highly unlikely given no new government restrictions recently) then it should be mostly open. Hope this helps

Yeah that helps. Thanks

I can confirm that all indoor buildings are open now, or they were as of last month. This even includes the smaller monkey houses whose outdoor enclosures were also inaccessible during the height of the pandemic. :)

That's great thanks

I had a very nice visit to Dudley Zoo today.

It's nice to see that the zoo have now installed signage featuring the individual animals there including Daseep and Joao the Sumatran tigers and Kubwa, Josie and Kira, the giraffe family. I feel that this is a nice touch and I'd love to see more zoos do this.

The new orangutan enclosure in progressing really well. It appears that the perimeter fence is almost complete. Djimat, the new male, seemed very comfortable exploring both the indoor and outdoor areas he currently shares with the zoos females, Jazz and Sprout. The main outdoor viewing area was blocked off, presumably to give Djimat space to settle in. Although the orangs were still visible from a distance, this was disappointing but I completely understand and appreciate it.

Both the cassowary and macaque enclosures are looking great now the plants have started to grow in.

No sign of the remaining elderly guanaco so I'm assuming that it has sadly passed away.

The pygmy marmosets seemed to be getting on well despite the recent passing of Pam, the breeding female.

I'm not entirely sure how many arctic foxes the zoo currently hold. I'm sure that there was 4 when they arrived, I believe that there have only been 3 for a while but today I only saw 2. Either way it's always a pleasure to see them. They're such a lovely species and it's a pity that very few large collections keep them.

A new feeding winch has been built at the giraffe enclosure since my last visit and it was a wonderful experience to see Kira ,the youngest giraffe, making full use of it. She's also grown so much and it's amazing to think how small she was not too long ago.

Nice recap, thanks. :)

Yeah, I'm also confused about the number of foxes. I've only seen two on display since (at least) March 2020 and I don't have a clue where the other two went, or if they've left at all?

Some recent news:

- Benji (male Bornean orangutan) turns 44 years old today.

- A huge memorial of cascading poppies has been installed on the side of the castle to mark the forthcoming Remembrance Day commemorations.

- Throughout the month of December, all admission tickets will be discounted to just £10. Tickets still need to be booked online.

- The zoo will not be doing the Santa's grotto this year for the second year in a row.

Never actually visited dudley zoo before, but one of my favourite tigers lives their daseep. However what age is she now, because last time I checked I guessed she was 12?

Inca, the bear, is long dead

The zoo now have 14 gelada (11 individuals in the breeding group and a bachelor trio)

Before these two births I thought the breeding group consisted of 10 individuals. 10 + 2 = 12, not 11.

Maybe I was wrong to begin with, or maybe they lost one of them?
