Colchester Zoo Colchester Zoo Elephant Program

Good to see that zoochat knows what is best for the elephants at Colchester, but seeing as none of what has been suggested is being done the people that do know what they are doing don't agree.
I never suggested that .. the staff do not know what they are doing and you would know that from me.

I also think that if the cow is pregnant, it would be Kibo's calf, not Jambo's calf. Jambo is probably kept separate from the cows.
This is an additional reason why I think Jambo should be moved on to breed and even socialize with cow elephants, being in solitary confinement is bad for an elephants mental health, elephants by nature are social animals and should be mixed with others of their type. Elephants are highly intelligent animals and like humans being segregated from others will result in bad behaviour poor social skills and ultimately no elephant calves.

In my opinion the best scenario for Jambo would be to do a direct swap where Jambo returns to Colchester and his father Tembo heads in the opposite direction to Bioparc Valencia.

Jambo is to be relocated, but it is not yet known where and when. But this is likely to happen this year or next. But Colchester has no cows to breed. Better would be Beauval or Vienna.

Could Noahs Ark Zoo Farm aqiere some cow elephants and start participating in the African Elephant breeding program?

I know strictly speaking this question isn't anything to do with Colchester zoo ,but isn't the Elephant enclosure at Noah's Ark Zoo Farm the biggest in the whole of Europe?

And wasn't the Noah's Ark Zoo Farm elephant enclosure oringinly intended for a breeding heard of Asian Elephants and not African ones!

I think this thread needs to end as we're not getting anywhere and tbf questions have been answered, as in the herd will stay here until they pass away. I hope they become/create a breeding herd in the future but I feel we've got our answers for the time being

Did Tembo ever breed naturally? I seem to remember his calves at Colchester were the product of AI or is that not correct?

A UK zoo that may need a bull sometime soon is West Midlands Safari Park who I believe are soon to upgrade their facility in order to take on a bigger group. But again that will not be immediate.
He concieved naturally 5 times once successfully with Rosa, and 4 times unsuccessfully with Zola. (Just look on elephant database for further information.)

Pertinax Tembos only naturally sired offspring was Jambo who was born in 2002\4. Jambo was born to the former Chipperfeld cow Rosa who was euthanized in 2007 due to major internal problems with her reproductive organs. However Tembo sired a male calf called Kitto with the elephant cow Tanya.Kito moved to Dvur Kowe zoo in the Cheque Republic where he passed away about three years ago. This birth was achieved by AI. Tembo sired another AI calf called Abu but I believe that he also passed away. Jambo is I believe the sole surviving offspring. Due to this I think that Tembo should depart Colchester bound for a breeding heard!
He sired 7 calves but only 4 lived out of the womb. Age order: Abu, Kito, Jambo, Thabo-Umasai. Abu and Jambo are the only two still alive. Jambo has no offspring and Abu has 5 surviving offspring.

Also anyone got news on here? (at Colchester) I did a Rhino keeper shadowing experience 3rd March 2019 I asked the guy if they were breeding the elephants and he said they couldn't breed. My mum remembers him saying it was Tembo who wasn't fertile (she might be wrong). This day Tembo was let outside again after his dental treatment for the first time and I remember being gutted at not seeing him inside. This year I had a mandrill experience in May and a Giraffe experience August. I asked the lady doing the giraffes and she said they did want to breed the elephants but it had been halted due to Covid. I may be wrong but I think she said they wanted to acquire some new females. (she might not have mentioned a specific gender).

@Rajang-GOAT this bloody Coronavirus has hindered many things worldwide. Back on topic I hope Colchester follow through with their quest to obtain further African Elephants. Colchester won’t be able to use Covid as an excuse for much longer,as the situation is improving and the world is opening up.

I certainly agree with you however I have had to realise in my time growing as a zoo nerd that sometimes zoos don't breed animals even if they can or are not interested or won't go out of there way. Though out of all of the animals in Colchester, elephants are definitely a species I would like to see progression with after all these years.

Before Howletts announced the rewilding of their elephants (thankfully postponed) I could see a split in the herd with Tammi her daughters Jara, Uzuri and Mirembe, grandson Oku, her niece Juluka, and grand niece Mazi moving to the West Midlands Safari Park (Jack or Shaka as the breeding bull), while Jama, Etana, Nusu, and NGuvu would to Colshester with Five (Coco as the breeding bull) and Impy, Mchumba, and Sutton moving to Noah's Ark with Tembo

Forgot to add Tanya, Opal, and Zola they would move to Blair Drummond to live with Mondula, I would also move Aviva (Unrealistic I know) to West Midlands to live her granddaughter, great-granddaughter, and Tammi and her family.

Nice ideas but who's Aviva?

Again good idea but I think the people of Colchester zoo (me included) hold our current elephants close to our heart. Although I know it would be difficult breed without that happening. I think maybe Colchester could just get a new female or two to go with the elephants we already have.
