Zoo secures itself as 'conservation powerhouse'

Taronga Western Plains Zoo is securing itself as the threatened species conservation powerhouse of Australia with four successful programs and a fifth starting in the next 12 months.

The five programmes are for:

- Tasmanian devil
- Greater bilby
- Plains wanderer
- Regent honeyeater
- Platypus (2022)

1.2 Slender-tailed meerkat pups have been born:

Trio of meerkats born at NSW Dubbo zoo

The trio recently emerged from their den at the Dubbo zoo after being born to parents Midra and Howell on August 16.

The pups have five older siblings after Midra and Howell's first litter was born last November.
 
Eight Ring-tailed lemur infants have been born:

The zoo's keepers are thrilled to see five new males and three females join the troop.

It's the most successful breeding season ever, no small feat, given Lemurs generally have only a 24-48 hour window each year to breed.

The babies were born to eight different mothers - five of them first-time mothers who were themselves born at the zoo in recent years.

Among the infants are offspring from a new male Skynard, who arrived at Taronga Western Plains Zoo last year and brings a fresh genetic pool to the breeding program.

Good news. Dubbo's new breeding male came from St. Catherines Island in the United States via Australia Zoo's importation in 2018 so valuable genetics for the region's Ring-tailed Lemurs.

Hamilton Zoo also sourced males from the USA a few years back. It’s good to see some initiative amongst our zoos in importing new genetics.

Taronga Zoo have a bachelor troop, so could be some options there. Wellington will also presumably be looking to build up numbers given the size of their exhibit.
 
Great news. Eight Plains-wanderers bred at the Tarongas have been released into Victoria as part of a second trial release. From their social media.

"Last week eight rare Plains-wanderer birds bred at Taronga Western Plains Zoo and Taronga Zoo were released into the Northern Plains of Victoria as part of the National Recovery Program's second trial release for the species. The release will help bolster wild populations that have declined by more than 90% in the past 20 years. This critically endangered bird is now only found in this part of Victoria and in the Riverina in New South Wales.

This release is a true collaborative effort with extensive planning required by teams from the partnering organisations to overcome challenges such as border closures. It is a testament to all partners involved that we have been able to work together to ensure this important release could take place despite the circumstances. Prior to being released, all eight Plains-wanderers were fitted with leg bands and radio transmitters to allow researchers to closely monitor the birds and add more data to the knowledge library about this unique species, as part of this release research trial."

Nilo is going to be one well represented lioness when you consider her son Ato has sired five cubs at Taronga; she has three sons heading up the breeding pride at Monarto; Lwazi is now in a breeding pride at Taronga; and she has a daughter still at Werribee, who will be joined by males in the near future.

A record for longevity for the region that no giraffe before her has ever reached. I believe she also holds the record for the most sets of twins (three). I’m hoping her daughter at Auckland will match that one day, considering she’s already had one set herself.

PS. That was a really great tribute the zoo and the keepers did. Open and honest communication with her many fans.

I see the like button as more of an acknowledgement that a post is meaningful.

Reasons to like a post include:

1. Thanking someone for answering a question you have.

2. For recognising effort i.e. a post that’s clearly taken time to write.

3. For recognising initiative i.e. when someone emails a zoo and shares the answer.

4. For acknowledging a post that literally made you laugh out loud.

5. For sharing piece of news you think is significant e.g. it’s no coincidence that an elephant birth gets more likes than a zoo putting its meerkats back on display.
