Twycross Zoo Twycross Zoo News 2021

I really don't know but here are the names of the Twycross Chimps left. I might have missed a couple out as I can't remember whose passed in the last 10 years or so.

Coco, Jambo, William, Peter, Samantha, Tommy, Holly, Jollie?, Genet, Tuli, Victoria, Jomar, Josie, Flyn. I can't remember who else.

I would guess in the future, Twycross will bring in new younger Chimps for breeding but who knows.

I think Jolly died the same night as Kip as there was some speculation about it at the time.

You’ve also missed out the (relatively) new male, Kibale I believe his name is.

Yes I couldn't think of his name as I got mixed up with Vela (or whatever the name is) who is at Chester.

Just seen this on Twitter from Biaza

A family of bonobos at Twycross Zoo have taken a first look at their brand-new enclosure - and are already making themselves right at home.

The habitat will be the new home for the Zoo’s family of 13 bonobos - and this week, they explored their newly refurbished outdoor habitat for the very first time.

The Zoo's own FB page states that all the Bonobos( 13) have moved in here. It contains 'two outdoor habitats for the two groups'. (One of these will be Joe's old area from when it was gorillas in here). So what will their previous area now hold?

It would be nice if they moved the Orang-utans over to the old Bonobo house to give them more indoor and outdoor space and more climbing for them but anything could move in there.

I still believe this is a temporary move and measure before new modern great ape facilities are built to purpose.

Look at those seventies style house and drab paint job

Certainly that will be the plan. Those older Ape houses won't be there for ever. The advantage in the meantime is they can keep the two groups with both having outside access. Its quite a logical move.

Pertinax do you know of a timeline for that to move ahead?
Not any longer. There were plans produced by Twycross somewhere on Zoochat that showed a timeframe for the building of all the new Great Ape exhibits, and the Education/Research Centre. However I am sure that will all have been delayed quite a bit since Covid.

I was there last week and really couldn't understand why both groups had been moved! The larger of the old gorilla outdoor enclosures is barely any better than the old Bonobo one, so the old 'Joe's' one at half the size is considerably worse!

It is on a management level better, they could swap the groups around so each one gets a day or two in the bigger half.

So much better than having one outdoor enclosure they have to share.

Overall, it means both groups can go outside at the same time, while having them still living side by side means they can presumably swap individuals over if need be (if in fact that happens.) I agree overall the enclosure isn't much better than previously but I think management -wise it makes sense.

Were you able to go in the house?
