Miniature Animal Figure Collection

-My first one was in the gift shop of Birch Aquarium in California. Gift shops of aquariums and zoos usually have them.
-Next ones in a commercial center, in the toy section.
-Next ones in a stationery. Many of my figures come from stationeries (kiosks).
-Soon I had my first online purchase. There are many international online shops specialized in selling this kind of figues. I can provide a list if you want.
-I also bought some in toy shops.
-After many figures I did my first purchase of Japanese figures by contacting a person specialized in getting Japanese figures to western world by a fee.
-Then I started to use eBay and similar sites, tough this method can be a bit more expensive. I do not use it often.
-My 27th purchase was bought in a veterinary-pet shop.
-The 29th purchase was my first trade with another collector.
-My 33th purchase was buying in an art shop.
-When I reached 99 figures, I did my first homemade model (37th batch in my collection). Then I did many many more after.
-The 55th purchase was asked to my sister as a gift for Epiphany. She bought them online. I also received them in birthdays.

These are all the methods I used.

My newest addition: Schleich newest emperor penguin.

Sizewise it fits better as a king than an emperor penguin so I customized as it:

Time for my usual pre-Christmas splurge of new animals! My recent additions for my growing collection I got today from the local hobby store. I really like the musk ox and gemsbok in particular. A range of Schleich, CollectA and Safari models.

Very nice! I'm surprised you found the Anhinga, it's been discontinued I believe. Might have to get Schleich's new Proboscis by looks of it, I like theirs better than the Mojo one I have.

So was I! The hobby store I go to does often have a range of retired figures for a few years after they have been discontinued though, presumably due to excess stock from initial orders. Having both the Mojo and Schleich Proboscis, the latter is certainly much better.

Wow, that sounds like a really good selection then! I wish I had a local store with better variety, in my local area I've only got two stores carrying Safari, one with Schleich, and one carrying Mojo now; several stores that used to have them either no longer do or are out of business. Large majority of my figure shopping is online now.

Nice new bunch! They're masterpieces in many cases. I have the unbeatable CollectA musk ox and Schleich gemsbok, as well as the Schleich proboscis monkey (not as nicely painted as Mojo, but much better sizewise for my taste), and the Safari leopard shark, that was the first figure of my collection. The Safari indian rhino is in my wishlist, I favour it over the equally good Schleich. I pass on the other figures because they're young animals while I collect only adults (gazelle, guitarfish and bamboo shark), due to excessive size for my taste (anteater, darter, guitarfish and bamboo shark) and/or due to bad proportions (anteater, darter). I already have a bowmouth guitarfish, that except for the ugly eyes, is perfect for me (the Schleich adult one), while for giant anteater, I want the Papo one, long-time retired and very hard to get.

Now @Kakapo. I don’t want to sound too biased, but in fact, the only giant anteater figure that I currently have in my collection just so happens to be the discontinued one from Papo. Although, I do think that the Schleich one that @WhistlingKite24 shared earlier is another gorgeous model that I would personally like to acquire one day when the time comes.

Ever since my last post of my collection back in May 2020 I haven't had many new additions to my collection (none actually to be precise :p)

However today I decided to get myself a day early birthday present and happened to find myself in the local towns toystore.
Now this store is where somewhat a third to a half of my collection comes from.
By all means no big store and the Schleich's collection bascially stays the exact same as is for a year or two with barely any stock or variaty.

Today was no different from the usual, near empty Schleich's schelve with just a few mini's, some horses and 2 dinosaurs and a playset.

Out of the 2 dinosaurs, being the ugly modeled big-head tyrannosaurus and a allosaurus I picked up the Allo cus it looked cute  and felt bad if I didn't bring him home.
So I did.
First acquisition; Allosaurus - 14580

Because a cart was half blocking the shelve I had to get creative looking around the whole thing.
Saw a couple mini ones of interest like a tarantula, ring-tailed lemur, young hippopotamus, giant panda.. But none of these really got me. Maybe I'll return for the young hippo to pair up with my older Hippopotamus - 14132. Though the models wouldn't really match.

There were 2 grizzly bears however, and given my username I think it forshadows how it went. I checked both models thoroughly and one was decently damaged, a shame really.
So the other one I took home with me. Grizzly bear - 14685

The rest of the shelf was just horses. When I saw the Andalusian I immediately picked it up cause I rarely ''fall in love'' with a horse model that easy so it was a must have for me. Andalusian mare - 13793

Also found a painted horse, unfortunately no gelding given I like that one a lot, however there was a mare so I settled with that one. Paint horse mare - 13884

At last there were a few clydesdales hiding in the back of the shelve, so I took one of those home since I absolutely love the breed and couldn't pass up on one. Clydesdale mare - 13809

Conclusion: I am now broke for another year or so :p

There were a couple more figures of interest, so perhaps in the future!

Happy birthday my friend and congrats for your new figures :)
Maybe you can reclamate for the damaged bear?

It's some paint job things that went wrong (several rather big white spots) and the ear got painted wrong. I am by no means skilled with repaiting, perhaps one day. But for now I got too much to do as is.

My last additions: all figures are Safari LTD. Bought at the shop of the incredible Naturistorisches Museum Wien (Vienna's natural history museum), and old-style museum filled with endless cabinets of preserved specimens in taxonomic arrangement. The shop in the museum have more than Safari, and in fact it was the first time that I see Bullyland for sale in a shop. However Safari was the prevalent brand in the shop and all the figures that I wanted from here are of this brand.

1. Giant squid (Architeuthis dux)

2. The right whale, Eubalaena glacialis.

3. Megamouth shark, Megachasma pelagios.

The Safari walrus is undoubtedly the best walrus figure by any brand

Not sure if I would agree with this statement, but this probably is a preference choice.
For me the Schleichs new Walrus 14803 as well as Papo Walrus 56030 look more exciting.
Do you also collect young animals or only adult specimens? The CollectA Walrus pup 88569 is a really nicely modeled pup :)

The giant squid is absolutely fantastic looking. Are the tentacles easy adjustable as shown with the sperm whale or did you have to make any harder modifications to get it this way?

All the other figures look really great too, some nice species that other brands don't really have such as megamouth shark :D

Well, the Schleich walrus is nice, I've seen it in shops long time ago, but it have a maybe too smooth skin, Safari's texture is more real as well as the thickness of the neck, the eyes in the Schleich are slightly too big and melty, vs. the Safari's eyes that are more "wild" (Schleich is very well known for its tendence to make animals more on the "cute" side than on the "realistic" side), the tusks are a bit too thick (and more straight that I would wish), and the muzzle shape doesn't convince me. However, the flippers are probably better in the Schleich figure. The Safari figure only have one fault, if well a very minor one: the belly, where the walrus joint with the substrate, is blattantly flat and unworked, with no texture and no detail
Regarding the Papo walrus, it was my first choice years ago when I was starting my collection, until I saw it in a shop for sale, and went horrified by the enormous thickness of the tusks. Otherwise is a very good model. But Safari model have thinner tusks, more curved, and looks more real than both Papo and Schlech walruses.
For those that are picky about sizes and scales, I think Schleich walrus is a bit smaller than Papo/Safari walruses, so the latter fit better with this massive animal compared with many major brand figures of polar bears, seals and belugas.

The giant squid is indeed very well done and one of the very few choices of cephalopods outside Japanese brands. The 8 shorter tentacles are flexible, but not bendable, the two longer ones are more or less adjustable but they tend to come back slowly to original position, they're not like wires that one can shape itself, but they allow certain transformation of position. For that, in the image the longer tentacles are not adhered to the sperm whale's skin.

Safari is the only Western brand to do a megamouth shark (and many other shark species, as sharks are a speciality of this brand and it have more diversity of shark species than any other brand), however, Japanese brands did a couple of megamouths too. But much worst than this one in my opinion: one with articulated jaw and a clearly visible joint in the tail, the other very small, simplistic and glossy black.

I recently decided to count how many figures that I currently have in my collection; and I have now reached the conclusion that my collection has slightly increased somewhat, from 204 figures the last time I counted, to around 211 as of right now. Although, I also do hope to acquire at least a few more figures sometime next year, if all things go well of course.
