Medan Zoo have an female, Safari Lagoi Bintan have seven elephants (four female and three male), Bukittinggi Zoo have an male, Taman Satwa Lembah Hijau have four elephants (Two female and one male, with one of the female currently pregnant), Kasang Kulim Zoo have a elephant but I don't know their number.

Thank you, and what of all of the Taman Safari elephants I know one facility had a male calf born last year named Covid, and do you know when the pregnant female is due

The park in Cisarua have around 50 elephants, there's 20 in Prigen, not sure how many they have in Bali.
 
There is around 200 Sumatran Elephants on Java, Bali and Lombok in zoos and elephant parks.
Few animals can be found in Europe, Singapore , Japan and Australia ( all originated from Taman Safari)

Pairi Daiza had one female Sumatran elephant named Annie 2005-05-16 who died due to post maternal problems after giving birth to a stillborn calf in 2013
 
Just to clarify, is this thread to document all elephants of the Sumatran subspecies in captivity or captive elephants that live in Sumatra?

It's unfortunate that Annie passed away, she was a valuable Sumatran cow and could've been moved to Madrid to breed with Valentino. It is a good thing though that her calf didn't survive as it would've been another hybrid that likely wouldn't have been allowed to breed since the sire Po Chin is an Indian elephant.

They really need to make sure that all Sumatran Elephants in captivity are pure before breeding them. Also perhaps zoos could benefit from AI and maybe the elephants that live in those tourist places can be rehomed to zoos in the EAZA and AZA to create insurance populations if situations across Sumatra become worse for the elephants.
 
AI could definitely be helpful for the international population, there are four female Sumatran elephants at Australia Zoo and the older cows need to bred ASAP and Valentino could be used to AI them.

Why not get samples from other captive Sumatran bulls from Sumatra than only Valentino? I don't think Valentino should be the complete origin story for Sumatrans like how Thonglaw and Vance have been for Indians. Genetic diversity will help the population long-term, not just one bull. I think the Australian Zoo cows would benefit best from importing a bull directly from Sumatra.
 
I would prefer smaller zoos on the Island of Sumatra that breed Sumatran elephants would send their elephants to Europe and Australia to expand the world wide breeding program

Don't forget the US! Smaller zoos could benefit from having Sumatrans and could incorporate other species such as Siamangs, Sumatran Orangutans, Sumatran Tigers etc... into a Sumatran-themed area.

Honestly, the US doesn't need a whole different (sub)species of elephants at the moment. We need to get the Asian and especially the African populations to be more successful before a whole new subspecies is imported.
