I have noticed something pretty interesting.
I'm an advocate for reforming American wildlife management and what I've just noticed is that all of them are in favor of red wolf reintroduction and conservation, but at the same time, some of them are against zoos. My response is...
"Well, who has done more for red wolves than zoos!? While we're on the topic, who's also done more for Mexican wolves than zoos have!? Say what you want about state wildlife management, but leave the zoos and zookeepers alone!!"
I've heard the argument that zoos are prisons. To this, I show them a zoo exhibit and say "...Does this look like a prison to you?"
I've heard the argument that zoos don't help in the conservation of endangered species.
Not true, aza accredited zoos have partnerships with conservation organizations that they help support and they help in reintroducing animals into the wild. In fact, you look at history, captive breeding has helped save several animals from extinction.
I've heard zoos are only for entertainment.
Also not true, zoos work to educate the public. And animal rights activists will say things like "Not that many people learn anything from their zoo trip!"
My response is "The zoos try to teach the public, the visitors themselves choose whether or not they learn something at the zoo and many choose not to learn anything. So it's not the zoos that suck in this department. The public sucks."
Also, anti-zoo people are against zoos, yet they're all for sanctuaries. Why are zoos bad yet sanctuaries are fine? Both have animals on display for the public, and both enrich the lives of animals, So why are zoos bad but sanctuaries are fine? I do not get the logic here at all"
Another one. "Zookeepers are cruel".
Me: "Oh shut up. Go on a zookeepers YouTube channel and you'll see that's not even remotely the case."
Seriously, zookeepers love their animals. They don't make them into pets, but they love working with them. In fact, the reason the zookeeper position isn't high paying is that the ability to work with animals makes that job so attractive. They do their job out of love, not money.
One last note. Any animal-rights activist reading this and not believing a thing I'm saying, let me ask you this. If zoos are so bad, then why are there TV shows about what goes on behind the scenes at zoos such as The Secret Life of the Zoo and Crikey! It's the Irwins? And why do zoos also give behind-the-scenes tours to visitors? And why do the zoo staff have no issue with someone making YouTube videos when going behind the scenes such as videos on the day in the life of a zookeeper? Seems to me that if zoos were bad they wouldn't be open to any of that since there would be stuff they wouldn't want us to know.
