Los Angeles Zoo & Botanical Gardens Los Angeles Zoo News 2021

Unfortunately this story is old or they just found out about them just now, Hubert and Kalisa had passed away last year during the pandemic in the middle of 2020 :(they did pass away together so that was accurate.
Really I just found about it, but it was stated as new news

Really I just found about it, but it was stated as new news

That’s been happening a lot lately. A video of African lion cubs meeting their father at San Diego went viral this week, only for it be revealed it was news from 2014.

On a side note, it was interesting to see the pair of African lions euthanised together for a combination of health and welfare reasons. New Zealand zoos do the same - with Auckland and Wellington Zoo both euthanising their respective prides on the same day and Wellington euthanising several elderly canids in pairs when one was required to be euthanised on medical grounds.

@Great Argus Griffith Park is located in the middle of a mega city. Do you see skyscrapers adjacent to the San Diego Zoo Safari Park? No. Those animals including those mountain lions are out in rural areas near where the park is. P-22 is living in the Megacity. Los Angeles is one of only 2 mega cities where big cats live in the city limits. And the San Francisco Zoo is located as well in a very urban setting and that mountain lion that killed those animals for the record is now dead.

And we shouldn’t force that option of having them use urban areas. The Woosley Fire took out a ton of critical habitat in the Santa Monica Mountains and killed 2 mountain lions dubbed P-74 and P-64 in the fire. Mountain Lion P-61 crossed the successfully 405 freeway in 2019 to the Hollywood Hills. He got in a fight with another uncollared mountain lion and died the second time he tried to cross. Bobcat B-363 and B-361 were using urban areas only to be killed in vehicle collisions in Los Angeles. Bobcat B-372 died of rodenticides in an urban area in Los Angeles. Not saying they can’t use urban areas but in the past recent years that’s just not a great idea.

The LA zoo animals can win without the need to expand it and take more acreage from Griffith Park. The animals at the Los Angeles Zoo do not have to worry about getting killed on freeways, rodenticides, inbreeding, etc. The Wildlife in Los Angeles must come first right now in my mind. The Los Angeles Zoo needs to work with the land that they have

It is not located in the middle of a mega-city. Griffith Park lies towards the outskirts of LA proper. Is it an island in an urban area? Yes, largely. Quite a bit of potential corridor towards Bel Air towards the state parks to the West. There aren't that many skyscrapers around Griffith Park either.

Maybe because a lot of the mega cities are out of the range of the cougar?

I'm aware, yes.

How is fires forcing them into urban areas our fault? We try to prevent the fires.

You do realize they’re hit by cars and poisoned in rural areas too? Besides being shot at and trapped? Really not sure what your point is. Definitely harder for them to survive in urban settings, but they're at as much risk of humans in rural areas.

23 acres of over 4,500? Absolutely miniscule, and largely negligible to a mountain lion living in a giant park.

The Wildlife in Los Angeles must come first right now in my mind. The Los Angeles Zoo needs to work with the land that they have

Wildlife often does quite well on zoo grounds. The proposed expansion will not damage wildlife habitat that badly. The wide-ranging mountain lion will not suffer. To my knowledge there is no good reason the zoo cannot expand into the 23 acres.

Two further things: I have just learned there is a enormous wildlife corridor slated to be started in 2022, see the following article. Mountain lions are one of the key species involved.

Lastly, I do not feel this argument is still relevant to the news thread, and therefore unless you have a topic in the argument actually relevant to the news thread, I'm not going to continue this.

Very quick aside but this is great, having some sort of bridge connecting Griffith park to more canyon space for animals. Now just put one over the 405 to connect that section to Topanga and many of the animals living there will finally get the chance to travel long distances without worrying about majors freeways.

The zoo’s social media pages made the sad announcement that Bruno their hybrid orangutan passed away :( No precise cause of death is given but age may have been a factor in Bruno’s passing. RIP, handsome man…. https://twitter.com/lazoo/status/1466809711840436224?s=21

Heartbreaking, one of the most charismatic animals at the zoo and my personal favorite.

Fun story: a keeper told me that the reason Bruno was off exhibit for a while was that he'd learned how to untie the netting that kept the apes in their enclosure so he could slip out for a little stroll once in a while. However, the zoo quickly discovered that Bruno had taught some of his female companions his trick which ultimately led to the renovation of the exhibit.

I will miss him lying on the platforms while the little ones dropped off the firehose vines onto his belly, or playfully trying to swat them while they swung over his head. But most of all, I'll miss the way he'd lay his head in his hands and survey the crowd, observing the visitors while they watched him.

A male Chinese goral was born on May 14. His father passed away earlier this year (I believe in February per the Animal Transactions.)

Yes, the second baby was born on or about June 1 from what I was told on June 6 when I saw her (I think it's a girl, but I'm not certain). The male who passed away earlier this year is the father of both babies, so he managed to get both females pregnant before he passed away.
Can any one tell me the names and the names of the parents of these animals. From what it looks like, there were only two females at this time, so if determining which female was the mother of each kid isn't possible, the names of the two females would be appreciated. I would also like to know the name of the father. I am trying to collect information for a population thread.
