Pittsburgh Zoo & PPG Aquarium Pittsburgh Zoo & PPG Aquarium 2021 News

Thanks! That's awesome. I may be in the area in December and was hoping they'd still be there. I think they're a AZA phase out species since only they, Omaha, and Kansas city keep them right?

I think Knoxville has them too, not sure where else. I've seen them at Omaha and Pittsburgh. They're easily in my top 5 primate species.

So what's the likelihood it will survive unlike the other calf from 2017? Hope it goes well.

I think “pivotal” is the operative word here. Her weakened state means she’ll be more vulnerable to infections. Ultimately the zoo are fighting nature in that this calf would have died if born in the wild, but they have an ethical duty to treat the calf; and as long as the calf isn’t suffering, people would except nothing less. I too hope it works out, though being realistic, I have my doubts.

I hope that if it passes away they can half the calf mounted and displayed at Carnegie Museum. Not many natural history museums can say they have an African Elephant calf on display that's under a year in age. I really do hope the calf recovers unlike the 2017 one. It'll help the zoo raise its reputation in caring for African elephants and continuing its breeding program.

I also hope the calf recovers. These calves usually die anyway later (for example Kiran from Leipzig), but one day they have to make it to survive. I may be too optimistic, but I believe he can handle it.

I know that the ICC has Jackson, but does the zoo have or plan to house another bull long-term on-site at the zoo? Then they can double down on the breeding programs. Maybe they can get an unrelated bull from another facility (maybe perhaps overseas) to bring new genetics into the NA population?

I sincerely hope they have plans to import a bull from anywhere at this point. Jackson’s daughter Victoria is 22 years old and hasn’t had a calf so she’s extremely close to the cutoff for breeding cows. It’s so frustrating and disappointing that she hasn’t had a calf yet despite multiple AI procedures, so she really really needs a natural breeding opportunity. Also, Savannah hasn’t bred in 13 years and the younger cows Angelina and Zuri should start breeding asap as well.

Wow, the zoo's program seems to be on hiatus. It seems like the ICC is the only one doing the elephant breeding. :( Is the barn and the exhibit still capable of housing an adult bull?

So does this mean they're willing to drop their free contact program with the elephants?

With the state of that exhibit, I’m hoping they drop elephants all together. Honestly, that goes for a lot of the zoo. I don’t know how they plan on having big enough band-aids to apply for accreditation in a matter of months.

There's no way they're getting rid of elephants unless they're ordered to by the city or something.
