Paignton Zoo Regarding the Future of Elephants

This question has been bugging me for a while: Once Duchess & Gay have passed on, what will become of Paignton's future elephant-wise? Will they see they're conditions as no longer suitable and draw the line? Or will they want to keep more and possibly expand the current facilities?

Would like some feedback please.

Although I'm biased and would like to see them expand their facilities, It think they'll probably give up on them. I'm more curious as to what they're going to do with either elephant when one of them dies. Wouldn't surprise me if the last got left alone until she died :(

I agree, they are probably gonna give up on the elephants at Paignton though this is just my prediction..would be better if one died to send them off to another zoo though,

Im think gigit will be the one to ask, personally id like the one that remains to move onto another collection but with thier old age that might not be possible. After that anything could happen.

Personally id like to see the giraffe and elephant paddock get merged and turned into a multi species exhibit, possibily african similar to marwells.

On zoo story a few years back the head elephant keeper said that they would stop keeping elephants after the current pair die. I too would like to see the area merged with the giraffes.

When the first elephant dies could we see the newly set up "retirement" home in Belfast perhaps coming into the equation?

And that'll only happen if the African elephant (Duchess) dies before Gay (the Asian).

Does it matter? They are not going to breed from them so surely for such a sociable animal she should still have company even if there are not the same species

Well for a start, Africans can carry the elephant herpes virus which can be given to Asians, resulting in death. Second, I don't think they can even communicate, so she might aswell be by herself, although it is probably better for her to be with Gay, even if they can't really talk ;)
Edit: That sounds harsh, by "might aswell be by herself", I think I should rephrase that and say she'd be better off with other Africans, and the primary reason she probably wouldn't got to Belfast would be the virus transfer.

I was under the impression that it was more a problem with breeding herd? One of the reasons aspinall park struggled with breeding their Asian elephants

Not sure about that tbh, I just know it can be transferred to Asians from Africans with no affect on the latter.

Your faith in me is touching, Tigerlemurguy ;) I understood that they wouldn't continue keeping elephants after Duchess and Gay die. What happens to the remaining one after the death of the first one is on my list of questions to ask when I get the chance!
