North American Asian Elephant Population 2021

Could Ongard be sent to White Oak Conservation to mate with the cows their and live in a bachalor group with Osgood, Gunther, P.T., Irvin, and Barack with Casey or Charlie as the leader

Then what would happen to all the effort Miami did to expand their exhibit complex for their Asians? There are now 3 yards and that would leave Dalip & Nellie by themselves. Dalip is most likely nearing the end of his lifespan and Nellie is post-reproductive and is getting up there in age as well. To me, it seems pointless that Ongard would leave Miami. He has valuable genes and could be trained for AI which could be sent to other facilities across the country. He can stay at Miami and when Dalip and Nellie pass away the zoo can acquire new females for him to breed with.

No offense but as @Great Argus stated last week on the things that irritate you thread there is too much speculation and what ifs on the population threads especially this one. This thread has grown a lot in the last year mostly because of things like that. So I think it would be better if everyone stops posting things like this and just posted news on here. If you want to discuss and speculate, there is no harm in creating a separate thread to do so.

It makes absolutely no sense why Miami hasn't gotten younger cows at this point. Dahlip is a proven breeder and one of the most genetically valuable bulls in North America. Even though he's older, he's more than likely still very fertile, and other old bulls have bread just fine ( have bread at his age just fine Thai at Houston and Cheing Mai at Copenhagen, for example). Why Miami hasn't at least attempted to get a breeding cow or two makes absolutely no sense to me. If space is an issue, send out Nellie. Any number of zoo's would be happy to take her, it's not like she has any long-term family at Miami.

In addition, since they have OnGard, it would work out perfectly, as by the time any daughters dahlip sired are ready to breed, he will likely be deceased, and Ongard will be ready to step up and fill the role as the next breeding bull.

I saw this and just realized how short Spike in DC is. He must be only 9ft at most. Unless the guy standing right next to him is 7 feet tall. When I saw him in Tampa he looked so much bigger!

I wonder how many Asian bulls left in NA are at a minimum 10' at the shoulder? The only ones I can think of are Luke and Smokey at Two Tails Ranch, Groucho and Bodhi at Denver, Bo at the elephant sanctuary in Georgia, and perhaps Tommy at the Endangered Ark Foundation. I don't know how large the bulls at the former CEC are.

I know the Cincinnati Zoo intends on bringing in 4 Asian elephants from the Dublin Zoo but with their arrival are they bringing a ton of genetic diversity where they’re from or is it very little?

The elephants are a mix. Cincinnati Zoo plans to bring Yasmin, Anak, Kabir, and Sanjay. Yasmin and Kabir are both related to four other elephants including each other while Anak and Sanjay both come from the Motex x Warda line as Anak’s father was Alexander. This makes Anak and Sanjay very ungenetically valuable while Yasmin and Kabir are somewhat genetically valuable.

I’m assuming Yasmin is a female so is Kabir her son or is that the other mother

0.1 Sheena sadly passed away of natural causes this morning at the age of 50. This leaves one elephant at Phoenix 0.1 Indu, and I wonder what the future holds for Phoenix's elephant program. They just acquired a male GOHR a couple weeks ago from Fresno so maybe they will phase out Asian elephant once Indu dies and acquire a female GOHR and start a breeding program. Another likely option is housing a bachelor herd once Indu passes as the population is in need of another bachelor facility.

What is GOHR?

I want people’s input on this one because I do wonder where things stand with the Asian Elephant Population in North America and what the future could look like with Asian Elephants in zoos. I know Cincinnati Zoo wants to resume their Asian Elephant breeding program and I know Tulsa Zoo is building a new Asian Elephant exhibit but I don’t know if they want to start a breeding program for their Asian Elephant herd or not.

I only know of one mother expecting in 2022 and that’s Asha. I’ve been told Rose Tu could be pregnant at the Oregon Zoo but I’m not getting my hopes up with them. And is their any chance Mali at the Rosamond Gifford Zoo can still have a calf or is she post reproductive? Saint Louis Zoo and Columbus both just get on my nerves when it comes to Asian Elephant breeding.

Mali is only 23 she can still breed for at least two more decades.

Could you fill me in on her reputation please? I think I only heard her name for the first time a couple of months ago haha

she got fired over TB mismanagement as well abusing the volunteers and staff. TWRA was not happy with her management. Her current board consists of her being CEO, president etc. so she’s in total control. I don’t think that’s ethical.

zoo and circus people are also not happy with her.

Many elephant advocates despise her also.

A lot of photos and videos of her are just props.

I just wonder what would happen to the elephants when Carol gets sick or dies? She’s approximately 67 years old.

Carol used to be married to Bucky Steele in Texas by the way. Tarra was bred to Buke for that stillborn calf.
