The guy told me he was a part of Guest Engagement. And idk which website it is on, but last year I heard for sure that Argyle is the oldest sloth in the zoo database history.

Can 100% confirm, there are many, many, many reasons why we might have an animal off exhibit that don't involve them dying - or even being sick and needing medical management. There are introductions, exhibit maintenance, training, climatic guidelines - or sometimes the animal just doesn't feel like being out. There are animals in my zoo that I only see out on exhibit maybe one out of every ten or twenty times that I go by their enclosure - and I'm there everyday.
Updates from my visit today:
- The Sword-tailed Newts are gone. No sign of the Black Tree Monitors either.
- In terms of new species in the Reptile & Amphibian House, there was a Hellbender and Golden Coin Turtles.
- There was a Red-footed Tortoise in the rotational exhibit in KidZooU today.
- The Chinese Hwameis moved to the Coffee Plantation aviary.
- Some keepers were monitoring two Red-whiskered Bulbuls in the Hawaii aviary that were fighting. Maybe a new breeding pair?
- There were some species in The Rainforest exhibit in McNeil Avian Center that I didn't see and I'm not sure of they are still there since there were no identification guides.
- Crested Coua
- Crested Partridge
- Crimson-rumped Toucanet
- Nicobar Pigeon
- Yellow-billed Aracari
- I didn't see the Mhorr Gazelle, I hope this was due to cold temperatures, but it's worrying.
1. The zoo never had sword-tailed newts. Also the black tree monitors are very old but still there, but unsigned. They were off-exhibit for a while but are back on. Look high in the branches or in the leaves at the left corner in the exhibit.
2. The hellbender has been there several years and the golden coin turtle came in 2019.
5. Idk about the bulbuls. I believe there are four left since two died over covid, they are definitely in MAC and there may be some in Wings of Asia.
6. Rainforest aviary:
•The crimson-rumped toucanet passed away
•The Nicobar pigeons and aracari are there. I saw the nicobar pigeons a week ago but one is very old.
•No word on the patridge and crested coua.
7. The mhorr gazelle should still be there, I saw her a week ago and she’s still on the website. She may have been inside or hiding in an out of view area, earlier this year there was one visit I didn’t see her and I immediately saw her again the next one. She is very old and the last one in North America
Sword-tailed Newts are the same as the Brown Newts the zoo has had recently.
I saw 6 today.
The brown newt was signed a week ago but I rarely see it, I only saw one on one visit in 2021. Is it still signed? If so, it should be there, just hiding.
I heard two bulbuls died over covid, so there must have been 8 before covid.

Yeah maybe. Cause I remember them telling me they were down to 4. I’ll have to check next time.
The crested wood patridges are still there, I just found out they are the same as Roul Rouls which the zoo still has. 3 females arrived November of 2017. I remember them having at least one or two males in the past but I’m not sure what happened to them.
Rainforest aviary: many of the small birds are often hiding and people rarely see them. They blend in really well with their surroundings. So you shouldn’t always assume a bird is not there if you don’t see it.
Yes you missed your chance to see a toucanet. Dusty passed in March of 2021. At that time MAC was closed. The zoo gives monthly animal updates to staff, and, in April 2021 someone told me on an animal update that he died along with the two red-whiskered bulbuls and yellow rat snake. 4 animals in the same month. That was a tough time for the zoo when the buildings were closed. Another tough time I can think of was February 2019, when Charlotte the sloth, Meatball the pig-nosed turtle and Blackie the alligator all died in one week. That was so sad. The alligator was a sudden one too.
I visited the zoo yesterday.
-Once again, the black timber rattlesnake was off exhibit, and he was on exhibit two weeks ago. I am not sure what is going on with him being on and off. I am not going to make any fake claims.
-Indeed the brown newt is gone. Signs for it are removed despite it being there two weeks ago. It’s been there as long as I can remember, and when I seldom saw it, I only saw one.
-I found out about the bulbuls. An educator told me the zoo lost 2 in wings of Asia over covid, she also said that there are more than 6 total but didn’t say an exact number. They are in both Wings of Asia and McNeil.
-Wings of Asia is temporarily closed for about two months due to the cold weather and them trying to reduce the money with very few people going in over covid.
-Aye-ayes got swapped exhibits again, I think the purpose of that is for enrichment and sharing exhibits.
-In McNeil Avian Center, I saw the aracari, crested patridges and and Nicobar pigeons. All the nicobar pigeons are very old. The aracari and toucanet used to like to hang out together all the time since there was only one male of each.
-In McNeil Avian Center, the Mariana fruit dove is temporarily off exhibit. He had some trouble flying on exhibit but he’s doing just fine flying off exhibit so I’m not sure when he will come back. He is at least 23 years old.
-Several exhibit changes in Big Cat Falls, Kira the leopard was in the Tiger exhibit, one Tiger in the lion exhibit and one in the back of the trail. Zia the Jaguar was also out in the Jaguar habitat.
-I didn’t see the mhorr gazelle but someone on Zoochat saw her friday. Saw 2 out of the 3 red river hogs.
-Saw 3 mongoose lemurs in Primate Reserve, so it was the family group, not sure where the others were.
-I saw only one Trumpeter Swan on-exhibit, I am not sure where the other is.

What's in Wings of Asia? Standing outside it on Friday I saw Satyr and Cabot's Tragopans, Azure-Winged Magpie, an egret, and Red-Whiskered Bulbuls.
In addition to those there are also Golden Pheasant, Red-faced Liocichla, Spotted Dove, Spotted Whistling Duck, and Temminck's Tragopan.
I believe they're Novomessor cockerelli.
It was wild-hatched in Indonesia.

Until 2015, the zoo had a second king cobra who was a male and much bigger. The remaining female is at least 18 and the only king cobra left at the zoo. Are the king cobras a phase-out species?
What does ‘’chinese locality’’ mean? King cobras range a variety of colors from olive green to brown to black. How many ssp of king cobra are there?

All is correct beside there is also a Luzon bleeding heart-dove. There is only one now since one died over covid. I do not know what a red-faced liocichla is and I have never heard of it. I heard the white-crested laughingthrushes passed away if anyone is wondering. The cattle egret is very old and just moved in there during covid and he used to live in MAC. The Cabot’s Tragopan is also quite old and is actually blind in one eye. Total there are 4 Tragopans, all males, 2 Temmicks, 1 satyr and 1 Cabot’s.
King cobras are about to be split into a half dozen different species.
