Brookfield Zoo Brookfield Zoo News 2021

Glad to hear that the pangolins soon to be back. Not shocked on the closure of the Fragile Kingdom exhibit for Covid concerns. They probably may need some time to see if their animals or the guests would be safe for the time being.

So ready to see the Australian animals once more. Too bad it will be some time to see the bats again.

Desert’s Edge and Clouded Leopard Rain Forest have been closed for about a month now. No word yet on when they’ll reopen.

All of the animals in the back of the building will be fully vaccinated before guests can see them again.

A few misc. updates on some happenings at the zoo.
  • The pangolins are indeed returning to public view in their old exhibit in the coming weeks.
  • The nocturnal hall is under going some renovations and will be reopening by the end of the year. I'm not sure what exactly is being done.
  • This has been discussed in the gallery already, but for those unaware about half of the gorilla viewing has been blocked off to improve animal welfare. It turns out having guests view the apes from every angle caused some stress. There was some confusion if this was temporary, but I can confirm this is a permanent change.

I will miss seeing the gorilla family from above but it’s wonderful decision the zoo staff made.

All around great news! This is just what I needed to hear to try to plan a visit soon.

The gorillas’ well being matters the most. I don’t mind the change at all.

Now that the Pachyderm House is open, it will be awkward seeing the capybaras and turtles indoors for what used to be for larger animals elephants and hippos.

I have not been there in a month so I have not seen out on exhibit though I am planning to visit on Saturday
Thank you! Hope-fully you won’t see her then. I Hope Hudson finally got the job done after 8 unsuccessful years with first Anana then Nan. I’m beginning to doubt Hudson’s fertility. He’s had so many chances for cubs both naturally and through AI as he is the only donor I’ve ever heard of being used except one time with Nanuq of Columbus. Has he been tested recently to make sure he is still viable?

I'm sure they tested him before transferring Hope over to breed and I'm confident in Hudson being fertile especially since he comes from a very prolific family. Speaking of AI, which females have been AI'd in the past and no surviving cubs have been produced via AI so far, correct? In Secrets of the Zoo: North Carolina there is a polar bear breeding episode and they tested both Nikita and Anana's reproductive health prior to introducing them for the season so I'm guessing most if not all zoos do that.

Correct, no cubs at all have been produced from AI.
As for how many times it’s been attempted:
- Nan at Brookfield at least once - Donor was Hudson
- Anoki, twice in Maryland and once in Seneca Park - donor was Hudson
- Aroura at Seneca park at least once - donor was Zero
- Berit in Henry Vilas at least three times - twice from Hudson, once from Nanuq (procedures included hormone treatment)
- Snowflake at Sea world San Diego at least once - Donor Hudson

That is as many as I know, it’s possible that there are more that either I haven’t read about or haven’t been publicized. No matter what though, it’s incredibly disappointing that no cubs have been produced yet. Brookfield zoo has been integral along with Cincinnati zoo CREW in performing these procedures.

I stopped by the bears earlier this month and Hope was out and about. I can stop by the bears tomorrow and check for you if you’d like.
That would be so kind of you, thank you. Thank you for the information that Hope was out this month as well. It’s possible she just got a late start.

Thats disappointing to hear I was hoping we could have cubs this year, hopefully next year she will have more success
