North American Asian and African Elephant Populations: Discussion and Speculation

Luckily Trong Nhi and Nhi Lhin should be headed there sometime early next year so Spike will have three females to breed with. Hopefully Maharani is already pregnant so that the herd can finally start to grow.
And if Maharani, Throng Nhi and Nhi are all indeed pregnant it will be a major boost for the Smithsonian herd has that gives the calves the best outcome of living in a large herd were they can play and learn off the older elephants

Not trying to be disrespectful to the SSP or any zoos but if they made some of the decisions many of us suggest on this thread and others, the population would be much more successful. And if only they would look at what Europe is doing and learn from them. It’s not like the population has no potential, zoos just need to start working together with one another and with the SSP.

If I ran the African Elephant SPP I would move Tutume and Moja to Pittsburgh which would give Pittsburgh the following advantages
  1. Showing many of us that used to praise Pittsburgh for their breeding program the chance to prove them selves once again
  2. It would enable Pittsburgh the ability to start growing their two matrilines
  3. Reuniting Moja with her two daughters Victoria and Zuri
  4. Allowing Tutume the ability to mate with a more realistic chance of producing offspring

If the Phoenix Zoo is willing to house young bulls these are the bulls I could see moving there

1.0 Colonel (Buke x Whimpy) 1991-04-04 (Fort Worth Zoo)
1.0 Albert (Calvin x Lilly) 1998-11-29 (Albuquerque Bioparc)
1.0 Baylor (Thai x Shanti) 2010-05-04 (Houston Zoo)
1.0 Bowie (Samson x Bluebonnet) 2013-08-05 (Fort Worth Zoo)
1.0 Duncan (Thai x Shanti) 2014-02-07 (Houston Zoo)

And later 1.0 Thorn (Samson x Rozana) 2018-05-04 (Albuquerque Bioparc)

Though due to space constraints only three or four of these bulls have a realistic chance of moving to Phoenix

George is never leaving Rockton. He's chemically castrated and absolutely no use as a breeder at this point. He's also the parks main demo elephant. Being a castrated bull, there is no concerns with him being pregnant or worrying about young calves to care for, plus he's largely unaffected by any social tensions that could be running between the females. Plus having a large, tusked, easy going bull to do lots of your PR work is nice too.

I think the reason why Chandra is not getting pregnant is because she does not have her mother Moola to give her reassurance that every young female needs when she first comes into estrus.

As for Rudy and Sunny from Columbus, I sent an e-mail to the zoo about two months ago and they replied that they had no signs of pregnancy yet. So I don't really believe the pregnancy, but I'd like to be surprised.

Thats not what I’ve been hearing otherwise. However at the same time I’ve also heard Columbus doesn’t want to breed either which is a huge mistake if that’s true. At the end of the day zoos lie sometimes so it’s possible Rudy and Sunny are pregnant but that being said they’re probably not

No the reason why she hasn’t gotten pregnant is because she won’t let Rex breed her. Apparently she crosses her legs when he attempts to breed her (this was probably also the case with Sneezy). Chandra’s sister Asha didn’t have her mom Connie with her during any of her breedings and has conceived four times now. It’s honestly surprising to me that Asha became such a good mom considering she and Chandra were separated from their moms at such a young age.

Yes, that is definitely not the reason why Chandra doesn't get pregnant. Virtually all founder cows did not have their mother there with them to provide comfort the first time they were bred by a bull since the majority of them were brought in as infants between the ages of one and six years old from the wild or logging operations, so if that was the case, we shouldn't have a captive population to breed from at all.

Actually as a matter fact, sometimes leaving an older cow in with a virgin female to get bred is a poor idea, some older cows, even if they will allow themselves to get bred by a bull, are massive cock blocks when it comes to being around other animals attempting to mate. Just off the top of my head, Luka at whipsnade and Saida when she was at Leipzig, would do this.

has the zoo tried too artificially inseminate Chandra or is she too old to have a calf now

that’s a shame. Does she valuable genetics for the North American Asian Elephant Population?
She has three surviving paternal half-siblings: 0.1 Asha with whom she lives with at OKC, 0.1 Shanti at Houston, and 1.0 Raja at STL. Asha has 2 surviving calves with another due in Feb 2022 and Raja has 3 while Shanti has four surviving calves. So Chandra isn’t that valuable on her dad Onyx’s side but she is her mom Moola’s only surviving calf so sadly unless Moola has another calf (which is unlikely) her genes will no longer be represented in the population.
