Goodday to all,

My name is Johnny, I live in a small town with a big zoo, called emmen, in the northern part of the netherlands. The zoo of emmen ( called 'dierenpark emmen' in dutch), is naturally my favourite zoo, which I visit almost every 2 weeks, sometimes even more often than that.

I'm a member of a dutch zooforum for years, but yesterday I found this forum, and I couldn't resist the temptation, and joined.

Welcome from the US! You have some interesting zoos in the Netherlands. I particularly liked Ouewhands and Burgers.

We sure have. Have you also visited Blijdorp and Emmen? Together with Burgers these are the best zoo's we have.

Unfortunately I missed the trip to Emmen. I did get to visit Blijdorp, Artis, Wissel, Beekse Bergen, Avifauna, and Appenheul. I was there for the first International Zookeepers Conference in 2003. Had a great time!

I can imagine you had a great time. And too bad you missed emmen. But Artis, Blijdorp and Apenheul are certainly worthwile. And although I live in the Netherlands, I have never visited Beekse Bergen, Avifauna of Wissel

Welcome Johnny, lucky for you to live so close to a great zoo like Emmen. I have visited a few times over the years.

It is always fun to mention to people from the Netherlands where l am travelling as they are always suprised when l mention Emmen. Especially when l do not mention the zoo. As l figure most tourist simply go to Amsterdam.

First time at Emmen l arrived by train. I remmber getting off the train looking for a hotel and l found the zoo by its smell. "true" love the smell of a zoo!

Yeah, during summer time people can smell the zoo quite well in the city center.

I can imagine the surprise when somebody from abroad mentions emmen, without mentining the zoo. Even for dutch standards emmen is a small town, and mostly not interesting for foreign people. The zoo is the onliest thing which makes emmen noticible, even on a national level. Most people go for amsterdam, the windmills, the dikes and the tulips, everything that makes our country famous.

I wonder how long before the great zoos of the Neterlands are mentioned in the same breath with "amsterdam, the windmills, the dikes and the tulips"

It will take some time, most tourist are more interested in the coffee shops or in places where people still wear traditional clothing including the famous 'wooden shoes' to please the tourists.
