The new male is recommended to breed with Tanaya, Alta, and her daughter Anandi. The other adult female Asha is recommended to be transferred back to Fort Worth Zoo (where she was born) to breed with Parvesh (who was born at the park himself).

@Julio C Castro Posted a photo of a Sumatran Tiger named Jillian at the San Diego Zoo Safari Park. Is he/she new to the park as the name doesn’t sound familiar to my knowledge.

Also how many Sumatran Tigers does the park have now? As far as I know there’s 4 aside from Jillian
1. Dianne who’s a female that came from the San Antonio Zoo I believe is where she’s from I wanna say 3 years ago?
2. Joanne and her sister Majel who are both females. I think they’re 11 now the both of them.
3. Rakan is still there and he’s a 4 year old male.

Are they planning on breeding them again? And have they gotten any new Sumatran Tigers aside from Jillian?

The park currently has 6 Sumatran tigers:

San Diego Zoo Safari Park - 2.4 (6)

1.0 Teddy (Berani x Chrissie) April 22nd, 2004 at Fort Wayne Children’s Zoo
1.0 Rakan (Sparky x Damai) July 11th, 2017 at Smithsonian National Zoo
0.1 Majel (Utan x Delta) October 5th, 2010 at San Diego Zoo Safari Park
0.1 Jillian (Larry x Leanne) February 10th, 2013 at San Francisco Zoo
0.1 Diana (Raguno x Kemala) August 3rd, 2013 at San Antonio Zoo
0.1 Cathy (Teddy x Joanne) January 28th, 2016 at San Diego Zoo Safari Park

Cathy will be leaving the zoo relatively soon and Teddy has a breeding recommendation with both Jillian and Diana. Joanne left the park for Phoenix recently and Teddy and Jillian arrived at the park earlier this year from San Francisco.

There is also Teddy whom I believe had been at the Safari Park before prior to this time, both he and Jillian are the newer additions at the park were brought in over during the Fall time. Jillian is from San Francisco when I had asked and Teddy is from Fort Wayne based on the Sumatran Tiger population thread. So total we have 6 tigers so far, based on my October visit:

Rakan(male)
Teddy(male)
Majel(female)
Jillian(female)
Cathy(female)
Dianne(female)

Oh crap I forgot Joanne moved to the Phoenix zoo for breeding. Wow am I so smart lol

Also why does the Safari park keep getting these old Sumatran Tiger males to breed with their females? We’ve had Langkhan and Denver who were both old males when they arrived at the park and they died shortly after their arrival. Isn’t their any young males that they can bring to breed with those girls. Teddy is 18. Do they even live that long?

Males are generally capable of breeding into their late teens unlike females and Teddy is pretty genetically valuable so that’s probably why he was chosen as the breeding male. I don’t think Denver and Langka were that old, it was just bad luck that they both passed away without producing cubs.

did not know that until now but that makes sense. Hopefully some cubs are born next year
