Banham Zoo Banham Zoo News

Lovely visit to this fantastic regional zoo. Saw the tiger Cubs as well as Mum and Dad and that was very special. Red ruffed lemurs moved to Africa Alive. New Red Panda seems well settled in. Zoo was in good condition. Meerkats have moved to near the entrance and their old enclosure empty. Also there was a baby Saki Monkey in the tropical house, where both sloths were surprisingly active.

Enif was really vocal after Rocky's passing. She was obviously wondering where he'd gone.

She seems to have settled down since then, although I wouldn't be surprised if Banham waited for her own passing before getting another snow leopard. I think she's quite old herself and basically useless for breeding.

She’d be past breeding age now but she’s not useless.

Calling a cat useless cos of her age is a massive disrespect to the species n conservation…. Older /non breeding cats/species have a important role to play in conservation through education and awareness

To be fair, the post in question doesn't say 'useless', it says 'useless for breeding', which is not the same thing (even if it's not perhaps the most delicate choice of words). This is not a co-operative/social species, so a female past breeding age is effectively useless for breeding, and it's not unreasonable to suggest they might leave her to live out her days in peace before starting again.

I would think they'll introduce a breeding pair once she has passed, but as others have said, she's certainly not useless and the staff and visitors will hope she lives as long as possible. She's a very special cat.

Enif is post reproductive yes, and probably may live another 2-3+ years at 17.

Exactly. I never said she was useless - I'd never say that to an animal, especially one I see on a daily basis. I just meant that as a breeding animal she was "useless", not only because she is old and thus past her breeding age, but I recall hearing that there were some complications that mean she can't breed even if she could.

Besides, I know Enif as an animal isn't useless. I've seen her jumping around quite easily despite lacking depth perception thanks to her missing eye.

Hopefully she will continue to bring people a lot of pleasure for much longer, must be lovely to see her every day :)
