Zoo Experience Days in the UK

Has anyone done an experience day at any UK zoos?

I did a lion feeding at Combe Martin Wildlife Park a few years ago and would like to do another one. I'm most local to Twycross, Chester, Yorkshire and Dudley.

Has anyone done the Twycross Zoo Great Ape Tour or the Yorkshire Wildlife Park VIP South America tour? Or any others they can recommend?

Thank you :)

I've done the penguin one at Chester, it's pretty good because you get to go into the enclosure and get really close to them with no barriers and such, which you wouldn't get with lions ;)

I've done giraffe feeding at Dudley zoo multiple times and it's always been great. Just before lockdown I also did a zookeeper for the day experience. It was quite honestly one of the best days of my life. I got to feed lots of animals including penguins, sea lions, kookaburras, penguins, lemurs, spider monkeys, otters, meerkats and chimpanzees. I also got to go inside the Tapir house and stroke them. They are surprisingly more hairy than they look.

The highlights were definitely getting to fly one of the owls in the old elephant house, getting to see a baby macaque (it was only a few days old) and also got to go behind the scenes in the orangutan house and got to give the orangs a drink of diluted vimto. Getting to see them all up close was incredible even if Benji tried to spit at me!

The best part of the day was easily getting to feed the giraffes again. Kira was only a few months old at the time and it was amazing when she stood up and walked up to me before eating food straight out of the bucket I was holding. The keeper told me that it was the first time she had eaten at a feeding experience and that's something I'll never forget and I feel so grateful that I got to do it.

Family members recently did the Giraffe Experience at Paignton and thoroughly enjoyed it. Giraffe feeding outside and then a look indoors. The only drawback apparently is that the giraffes might not feel like coming over to be fed, so best to go in the morning. I've had two behind the scenes experiences with the orangutans at Jersey and they were just wonderful.
Not a normal occurrence, but in 2011 Paignton offered special Ape Days as part of the EAZA's Ape Campaign and I spent a day with keepers and other staff learning about the gibbons, orangs and gorillas and getting up very close and personal with those in the ape house :)

Yes I don't think I'd like to go into the lion enclosure :D I did a junior zoo keeper experience at Peak Wildlife Park (back when it was Blackbrook Zoo) and fed the penguins and a few others there which was great!

Which experiences did you do? Blackpool is a bit far for me but Chester is an option.
I did Rhinos which covered both species as well Bongo, Banteng, zebra but Giraffe was especially good, Okapi, Anoa, Babirusa and otters to name a few

I did a sea lion experience at Blackpool zoo 2 years ago and it was brilliant. You got to hand feed all of the sea lions, do a hands on training session with one of the sea lions then I got to be part of their daily display which was the highlight. I imagined that I wouldn't do much in the display but with the guidance of one of the trainers I did quite a lot.

Peak is good for very close encounters with penguins, tapers, lemurs and meerkats.

Now that's what I call a high-value experience. Must have been a lot of fun.;)

As a penguin experience I would recommend Birdland in Bourton-on-the-Water, as its the only place in the UK you get to feed King penquins, as well as their Humboldts. The price is reasonable too.

I've done quite a few experiences, all of which have been amazing. I'll try to summarise the ones that are local(ish) to you.

YWP - I've done the big cat one (or whatever it's called) where you get entry, lunch, and to see and feed the lions and tigers. Meerkats too but that was the least interesting bit lol. It was brilliant, you spend plenty of time with the keeper who takes you around and was very chatty and informative. You goes the big cats with tongs through the fence, but it feels very up close and personal. Apparently, one of the female tigers (sorry it was a few years ago, I can't remember their names) was feeling a bit stroppy with the keeper and decided to spray her through the fence. Luckily i wasn't in the firing line at the time. It was a great day that left me on a huge high.
I also did the giant otter experience much more recently. My mobility had significantly decreased, but they were very accommodating. This was another feed through the fence experience, and have a look inside the house. This was a much shorter experience, but the otters feel so interactive that that didn't matter. Obviously, they're still essentially just taking food from you, but they were bickering with each other, engaging with you, rejecting some types of food until later, etc. They're noisy, naughty and generally wonderful. Again, the keeper was brilliant.
Another day I've done there was with a local photographer. I bought it as a gift for my partner at a charity auction so it wasn't booked through the usual channels, but it was excellent. If that's something you're interested in, I can dig out the details.
I've also just bought a voucher for the Atlantic (I think) experience at YWP for my partner for Christmas, when they were doing 15% off - the maned wolf one. We won't be doing it until next year so I can't help you yet, sorry!

Blackpool- Might be a bit far for you, but I did an aardvark experience here. It's a brief one, but oh my goodness it's wonderful. You make up some slurry for them, go in, basically have a cuddle whilst they're eating. It's disgusting and endearing at the same time. They love a good scratch. Then one of them will take some mealworms from you, but the others aren't that bothered. They head back to their cuddle puddle, and you're allowed to sit by them for a bit, giving them a stroke and a scratch as they fall back asleep. It's blissful, and an unusual one.

I can't remember doing any experiences at Twycross, Dudley or Chester but I might just be getting myself mixed up. I know a lot of the member talks at Chester in the before times were excellent - the staff are incredibly knowledgeable and engaging, I'd expect the same very high standard from their experiences.

Hoo Zoo is near Telford if that's in your range? I've done a few experiences there too. They're often on groupon or similar with a good discount.
Raccoon, Raccoon Dog etc. Used to include binturong, but after biting staff, sadly you can't go in with them anymore. However, I think they alternate with a few different animals instead? The raccoon bit was lovely. You can hand feed a gorgeous little fella who's a banana fiend. Raccoon dogs are great, you go in with them and (carefully) hand feed them chicks. Very different from the raccoons.
I also did the carnivore experience here. I think its snake, owl, fox, serval. I was almost entirely in it for the serval, but the rest was good. You hold/wear a snake for a bit and someone chats to you about them. It's nice, but not mindblowing. Same with the owl - you hold it on a glove for a bit, take some photos, hear a bit about it. Perfectly pleasant. The foxes were surprisingly good. You feed them some chicks like the raccoon dogs. They're very interesting, you hear a lot about them whilst they grab the food and stash it for later. They're pretty cool. The serval was the best bit. You get to go in and see them up close, give them a stroke if they let you. They're beautiful. If you're lucky, you'll get headbutted in the legs a few times like I did, because I obviously was anticipating the high speed, drive-by stroking I was supposed to be doing as they went past me. It was really good.
I've also done a badger watching evening at Hoo Zoo, but I'm not sure if that's quite the same thing as you're after. It's worth being aware that because of the vouchers, all the experiences are very popular. You do them in small groups (4, I think). Then your experience is a little more variable depending on how everyone else in the group is.

I think that's most of the experiences I can remember in your sort of range. I can also recommend Gauntlet near Knutsford if you like birds of prey. They provide all the birds for Knowsley safari park, but if you were looking at doing that for an experience, I'd definitely go to the Knutsford site. I have done a ton of their experiences and they are always incredible. Every single member of staff goes above and beyond, you can see they live and breathe their birds and they have so much to tell you. Anyway, that's a bit of a tangent - I have lots more info on them if you're ever interested.

Sorry for the huge essay! This is after I keep thinking I'm forgetting some, too! I hope it helps.

I have a few bits to contribute to this thread as we like to do animal experiences but mainly when the cost includes an admission ticket and as a result the experience is a relatively small(er) contribution. So I haven’t done any full keeper for the day experiences but have done quite a few species specific ones;

Combe Martin - Lion Feed
I see you have done this one already. But for the benefit of others, I thought this was a good one. Feeding one of 2 male lions with meat held in clamps through fence and working the cats through some training positions (climbing the wire. see avatar. laying against the wire and another I don’t recall). Think it was only 3 moves and 3 pieces of meat per participant if I remember but good for the cost I thought.

This also has the added bonus of being held at park closing time and the genet was becoming active as we were leaving.

Hemsley Conservation Centre – Brazilian Porcupine
This was a Christmas gift and not too much to say about it really. You go in to the enclosure with the porcupine and some monkeys and hand feed the porcupine if and when it is enticed down from the rafters. Touch on the prehensile tail and took food by mouth and hand.

Noah’s Ark Zoo Farm – Big Animals Experience (won in a competition)
Took place before zoo opened for the day. First stop was rhinos (White) which allowed hands on contact and hand feeding of the two rhino’s head/shoulder area as they have an opening in the cage to access a feed trough. Gate operations to release rhino then mucking out (never understood the appeal of this as part of a paid experience…)

Then on to giraffes with more hand feeding, browse hanging and some target training and obligatory mucking out. Think giraffe interactions are becoming increasingly common place for zoo goers and as result we expedited this part of the experience.

Finally tapirs (Brazilian/lowland) small amount of feed but primarily a tickle a tapir type encounter.

From memory the experience in total lasted around 2 hours. NAZF also often (at least I have seen it twice on days I have visited) do ad hoc tapir encounters for fundraisers like word rhino day and offer short interactions for £5 or so but these aren’t publicised I don’t think.

Noah’s Ark Zoo Farm – Andean Bears
One of the best UK experience I have participated in.

Bears very vocal and interactive when I did it (former brothers before current inhabitants)

Great value for money (even if it doesn’t include an admission)

Hand feeding bears through wire wall for circa 20 minutes and then scatter feed for bears and coati’s.

Colchester Zoo – Elephant feed
Due to covid the regular free elephant (African) and giraffe feeding events were cancelled and they put on small sessions for pre-booked guests.

A little put off by being the only lone adult in a group of young families (but that was not to be unexpected I guess) but any concerns soon passed when feeding the elephants. I was given a tub with probably 20 sticks of carrot in it which lasted about 5 minutes but it was much better than the usual processional way of doing it.

It also brought back some great memories of feeding the Asian elephants at Whipsnade besides the old Tecton/Lubetkin house when I was very young.

Colchester Zoo – Aardvark
Great experience, brought many years ago on a 2 for 1 sale.

You have to climb in to the aardvark “burrow” and sit in the sawdust so may not be accessible/palatable for everyone. We bottle-fed the youngest aardvark who was very active. When the food was gone the aardvark sucked our fingers and put his tongue up our sleeves looking for more grub. The adults didn’t particularly rouse but were happy to be petted.

Longleat – Aardvark
Again a great experience. A gate was pulled across to join with the large viewing window creating a concrete floored pen. The aardvarks were moved in to this area for feeding (3 in total) and ate a variety of different foods etc and were very interactive, very strong and very keen to climb your legs.

Longleat – Anteater
You stand behind a waist height railing and the anteaters come and stand on their hind legs with claws on the railing. They were happy to be stroked and petted as long as you didn’t cross the barrier in any way. Fed bottle feeds and avocado amongst others.

Wingham – Puma
Hand raised Puma which you can “stroke” or possibly more accurately prod with your finger given the necessarily narrow gauge of the wire mesh. Very affectionate like a domestic house cat, you could fuss it behind the ears etc.

Wild Place – Okapi
Currently not available due to absence of all okapis but this was a great value experience when it was available. Okapi was stabled and stuck its head out like a horse would and was happy to be pet and hand fed.

If getting close to animals is your priority and looking at your suggested locations (Dudley and Twycross) might I suggest West Midlands Safari Park. The drive through element allows hand feeding of a huge range of safari park game; eland, buffalo, ankole cattle, giraffe, nilgai, bison and various deer etc. I have touted this establishment previously here on zoochat, but it really does represent a decent day out and fantastic value for money in terms of animal experiences/interactions.

I am always on the lookout for other good experiences so hopefully there may be some more contributors to this thread. *fingers crossed*

I did a Zoo Keeper for the Day at Dudley a few years ago and it was absolutely brilliant. The highlight for me was feeding the snow leopard. I also fed penguins and Asiatic lions, offered browse to the giraffes, took part in the bird flying display, stroked the tapirs, handled the lemurs, made up the sleeping quarters for the orangs and gave the chimpanzees fruit drinks. I've been visiting Dudley almost all my life (I used to live a few miles away) so it was fabulous to go behind the scenes. My husband came with me and the staff very kindly allowed him to come into restricted areas so that he could get better photos. The staff were brilliant - very knowledgeable and friendly and their passion for the animals was obvious. I highly recommend it.

Paignton is now advertising Keeper for a Day - joining in with the cleaning, feeding and care of various animals for £250.
