Asian Elephants in Europe 2021

@Mr.Ivory I don’t think Emmet will join the Dublin herd. He has only recently moved to Blackpool Zoo, and is yet to sire any calf’s there.
It’s not impossible that Chester will become home to some of Dublin’s Cowes in the future. I think Chester welcoming a new Bull and Cowes to join Sundara,Indali and Riva would be amazing. I think that Sundara and her Daughters should live their entire lives at Chester as not only are they a natural born Family but they could carry on the Hi-Way Family.
It would go very wrong if Dublin moved some of their females to Dublin even though their part of the Maxi and Cheing Mai clan, as they live in different herds and welcoming any new females will cause imbalance within the hierarchy. Chester will most likely get a new bull in the next 4 to 5 years in that time frame Sundara could have 2 more calves with Aung Bo before he moves to another zoo.

Instead of moving around proven bulls why not give the younger ones currently in bachelor herds a try?

It preserves genetic diversity, among other reasons. The longer you can stretch out functional generational time, the longer you can keep GD high (although with the number of founders, this is less of a concern for the EU Asian population, but still).

Is it a problem to keep GD high?

In order to keep GD high all participant should breed in same numbers. Is one of the conditions.
So also brothers, nephews should breed in equal numbers. Not just one participant of a (paternal) lineage.
How to look at the whole genome diversity in breeding? Sexual selection.

Why haven’t Sanoi had a calf yet? Hopefully Bua will have a female next time. I wonder what triggered the herpes attack (if it is the virus).

When I wrote to the zoo two years ago, they told me that Tonsak was not interested in Sanoi, but that they were doing everything they could to change that.

A lovely video of Targa!

And in other positive news, Fahim is now on his way to Copenhagen from Rotterdam, on what will amount to a temporary stay before he heads off to Lodz.

Interestingly, Rotterdam has also noted that Fahim will be going on "Dates" with two of the cows at Copenhagen. I'm assuming this means he's been giving a breeding recommendation with Kungrao and Maha Kumari, both of whom have calves that are over four years old at this point, however it could also be something else that's just lost in translation to me.

Yes, it's great that he's trying to take a chance on breeding.

I guess if Surin is not going to be bred with Fahim as she had a calf last year they will have to bring in another bull in three years?

Of course they will be bringing in a new bull, the plan has never been for Fahim to stay there for more than a short period of time until Lodz is ready to accommodate him.

Update: Fahim is now safely in Copenhagen.

The video they released about Fahims arrival had me laughing, I think it's very telling of his personality. From him setting the entire transport truck rocking while waiting in traffic, to climbing walls to look through windows right after his arrival, Fahim truly is a handful.

It would also seem Anada is now confirmed to be Copenhagens next long term breeding bull, as they have indicated that they are still waiting on their new "permanent" breeding bull to arrive from France due to complications of some sort or another. Personally, my guess is that we will see a three way move all at the same time (or within days of each other, at most). Fahim and Yo Ma to Lodz, and Ananda to Copenhagen, once Lodz is fully "Fahim proofed".

Where can we find this video? Thanks.
