Taronga Zoo Annual Report 2020-2021:

The annual report for the Tarongas is now publicly available. Below are the notable highlights, transfers and births. Full report: https://www.parliament.nsw.gov.au/t...Zoological Parks Board of New South Wales.pdf
  • 94 Norfolk Island land snails (Advena campbellii and Mathewsoconcha suteri) were bred in captivity as part of new insurance populations in collaboration with the Australian Museum, Parks Australia and the Norfolk Island Regional Council. Great to see this initial success so early in the initiative. 16 individuals of each species were collected from Norfolk Island and transported to Taronga in May 2021. So far, 30 juvenile A. campbellii and 65 juveniles M. suteri have been produced.
  • 54 Bellinger River Turtles hatched to six adult females adding significantly to the insurance colony. There are only seven breeding females so six out of seven is a great result. In November 2020, Taronga assisted with the release of 32 young turtles into the Bellinger River, adding to the 20 which were released in previous years. The Northern Corroboree Frog facility was also completed which has the capacity to hold 500 individuals. Sixty-six eggs were collected from a number of nests throughout their range to capture genetic diversity, in addition to the 100 eggs collected the previous year from a separate part of their distribution.
  • Another notable birth included a female New Zealand Fur Seal. The lions made a return of course with males from Werribee and a female from Dubbo. Chimpanzee, Naomi also produced a male infant following unsuccessful pregnancies in 2017 and 2019.
  • The new ‘Iyora’ Australia will incorporate a koala encounter area with canopy walk, provide significant extensions to the kangaroo and wallaby walkthrough experience, refurbish Taronga's iconic nocturnal exhibition and incorporate underwater viewing of platypus.
  • A few interesting transactions: 1.0 Goodfellow’s Tree-kangaroo arrived from Adelaide Zoo, 1.0 Fijian Crested Iguana arrived from Melbourne Zoo, 2.0 Noisy Pittas arrived from Darling Downs Zoo, 0.1 Regent Bowerbird arrived from Currumbin Wildlife Sanctuary, lots of movement with Regent Honeyeaters from various collections and 1.0 Quokka arrived from Wildlife HQ. Also a Short-beaked Echidna and Yellow-bellied Glider were absorbed into the zoo’s collection as wild rescues.
  • Several departures to others zoos from both Tarongas notably including 2.0 Giraffe to Hunter Valley and Monarto, 0.4 Przewalski’s Horse to Werribee, 1.0 Siamang to Hamilton (NZ), 4.2 Cheetah to Symbio and Hamilton (NZ), 1.1 Red Panda to Adelaide and Mogo, 1.0 Cotton-top Tamarin to Brooklands (NZ), 2.0 Black-handed Spider Monkeys to Wildlife HQ, 1.0 Australian Sea-lion to SeaWorld Gold Coast, 1.0 Goodfellow’s Tree-kangaroo to Currumbin, 2.3 Brush-tailed Bettongs to Canberra, 0.2 Yellow-bellied Gliders to Wild Life Sydney, 1.0 Yellow-bellied Glider to Moonlit, 0.1 Southern Hairy-nosed Wombat to Canberra, 1.1 Noisy Pitta to Darling Downs Zoo, 1.0 Noisy Pitta to Adelaide Zoo, 0.1.2 Plains Wanderers to Monarto and 1.0 Eastern Whipbird to Moonlit.
