Toronto Zoo Toronto Zoo Discussion thread 2021

@Animals R AMAZING! glad I could convert you to a Toronto fan!

I have heard through the grape vine that while gorillas Charles and Ngozi have be lets say super amorous lately she's still on birth control so nothing should be happening.

On the orang front Budi does spend time with Ramai while she is cycling. I think they only have him with her part time so that they dont have to permanently separate her from daughter Jingga who they kinda want to watch Ramai start rearing her little brother or sister. So Budi spends most of the time with Sekali and Ramai is with Jingga except for date nights.

Nothing will happen with the Indian rhinos probably until spring when Asha goes to Rum Creek.

A white rhino keeper did say this summer they were not breeding Zohari to Tom this year because they were maxed on space. This is a lie. We know they had Tom, Tony, Sabi and Zohari at the time Theo was born and for some time afterwards. They could could have bred this summer and still had nearly 2 years before they had a calf the same age as Theo was when Tony left. However its possible she is already pregnant and there is no reason to breed so they just misled. Aslo no mention of Sabi. Is she pregnant? Or have they just given up that much that they just dont think of her.

Got a chance to see Paprika today, she seemed pretty comfortable with the yard, hopefully she'll be on exhibit soon. Our other two pandas were fast asleep in the trees. Weird to see Adira not bouncing off the walls for once.

Still no Pemba, but his quarantine should be up in the next couple days so I'd expect him to be on exhibit by the end of the month if not shortly into the new year.

One of the red river hogs, not sure who, was undergoing a jaw fracture repair in the WHC this morning,

Holly seemed a little down today, I wouldn't take my five minute observation to mean anything but time will tell.

@TZFan do you know if grassland whiptails are on phase out? I've noticed their numbers decline over the last couple years and it seems we're down to two (unless they've done what they did with the lemur leaf frogs and moved them to WHC for some treatment), which is especially weird since they're an asexually reproducing species, so it's not like they would necessarily be having difficulty reproducing.

Oh dear poor red river hog. A fractured jaw does not sound like fun and something that could potentially be really bad. Hope its ok whichever one it is.

I dont know if they whiptails are on phase out but not really a species I think would be one on phase out. They can live pretty comfortably with the 2 chuckwallas and there are supposed to be 3 younger chuckwallas coming in the future. It gives them a simple mixed exhibit. Could be we had a lot of old timers and they want them to die off before they bring in replacements. But thats just a guess at best.

Great Zoo visit today...

Today I went with Eurasia, Tundra Trek, Africa and Indo

Starting off with Eurasia: Got to see all three red pandas! Paprika was definitely the most active of all of them, constantly running around the enclosure. Then the Camels were out A couple females did look a bit large but it could just be the winter fat. Everything else was as expected as in No snow leopards just the one chamois on exhibit.

Then, TT Only really go to see Juno alone and I think Nikita and Aurora outside. Nice to see the wolfpack as well. The Wolf pups have really outgrown their brown spring fur coat.

Africa was pretty Boring since the main savannah animals were all off display. But Amani and Mstari were quite active and Amani is really starting to look all grown up.

Now the gorillas were really active as the family group was out and eating some Christmas goodies. As well Penny was with Mom, Kindia and dad Harvey was alone so the two exhibits had Pygmy Hippos and not a red river hog in sight.

Indo Malaya was really nice to see... Bucky appears to have been removed from the gibbon mix, maybe give Holly some alone time, really I think that they should put Puppe in with Holly as they are an old pair and not too active as well they are in need of Company. Then in the Greater one horned rhino house They appear to have removed Kiran's picture from the Rhino names of who is who. So that really caught my eye. As well, they have opened up the whole indoor area just for the rhinos so I guess the babirusa are no longer viewable in the winter since now Bucky has been taken out of the gibbon exhibit ?

That was basically my Holiday visit nice to see the Staff all in festive hats as well the Marketplace wasn't open but was nice to see the setup they have going.

@Akula glad you got in a nice Christmas day visit! What better gift to ones else then a day at the zoo.

I dont think the zoo is likely to put gibbon Holly in with orang Puppe. The gibbon exhibit isnt orang safe or would provide Puppe with the right enrichment. Besides at their age I think it would be very stressful for either one to meet someone new or move exhibit. Also Holly has been known to be the trickier gibbon. I know Lenny was the one to lose him mind the first time they tried to pair the babirusa with the gibbons but they had all suspected the one who would be the problem was Holly. Wouldnt want to stress her with a giant new creature like Puppe or have her feel she needs to attack good old Puppe.

Just as clarification for those not as familiar with the zoo Juno, Nikita and Aurora are polar bears, Amani and Mstari are Masai giraffes, and Bucky is a babirusa.

The babirusa may be visible in the winter. Just because today it was all for the Indian rhinos doesnt mean other days when they are outside that the babirusa will be out. Remember they still have to rotate 4 animals in 3-4 groupings though the same indoor space. What is interesting is that Kiran's info is down, especially since Asha is the one who is supposed to leave. Was the travel crate still there? Im sure they would announce if he left. Oh one can only hope that when the SSP said Asha goes Toronto said please no take Kiran instead that things changed. SSPs are never written in stone. Might even be so lucky that they bred before the recommendations changed and they cant transfer her due to an impending calf. Now thats just be grasping at straws trying to be optimistic! I have heard nothing regarding anything other than Asha is on the move. Please dont take Asha. Take Kiran. Ill gladly give him over to keep a breeding pair.

@Neil chace we have two chamois, Julie and Bailey, though Julie is the only one to ever come out on exhibit. There is a small yard connected to the main exhibit that's covered in vines where Bailey tends to hang out.

The Rhino pavilion is open for the first time in two years, maybe I'm misremembering but if we're talking about the signs just past the doors, I don't think Kiran's info was ever up? I thought they'd had Vishnu, Asha and Nandu (prior to his departure). So that doesn't seem strange to me at all that Kiran isn't there.

@Kalvin that could absolutely be possible with the rhinos. Its been forever since I needed to go inside, forget covid keeping it closed. I will still hold on to my deep denial that Asha is leaving though. I need something to hold on to. Lol.

I was actually quite lucky getting to see Bailey today, but it was not a great view, he was stalking the camels but you could really only make out his shape as he was sitting down then paced a couple times but really not a great view, Julie is pretty active in the mornings and I would say it’s the best shot at seeing her.

Not 100% sure about the signs so I’ll definitely take your word for it… I think it was Vishnu I had seen today based on his horn but don’t take me for that one I’m much better at identifying the white rhinos compared to my trash abilities with the Greater One horned rhinos in Indo.

Today's Facebook Live focused on white handed gibbon, Holly. It was nice to get an update on how she is adjusting to live without her long term mate Lenny. She's doing ok though she is calling for him still and she's not carrying around her stuffed baby as much. Bucky is still in with her but they are giving her breaks from him. They aren't discussing a replacement yet as their focus is totally on Holly and they discussed mixing her with the orangs but have decided against it due to her age and the fact the outdoor exhibit isnt set up for a gibbon. Really informative one and I liked that they shared about Lenny's passing and its impact. You could tell as they spoke the keepers were still sad he is gone. I'd like to see more of it in the future when an animal passes if keepers feel up to talking about the passing. A blurb to tell you about the passing is all well and good and lately super informative but its different to hear the keepers themselves because you can pick up on their love for the animal and hints of their sorrow. Makes the whole thing seem less cold and impersonal. Thank you to keepers Laura and Sarah for being willing to address a topic which probably is still very sensitive for them.

We were at the zoo yesterday and it was easily 10x busier than just before Christmas on the 23rd. Not “summer” busy, but the number of people there was noticeable. Must be everyone looking for something to do post Christmas.

A couple things I noticed:

1) Australasia pavilion - the entrance and greenhouse were still closed. Could be things were slow over Christmas - but it feels like it’s going on a month? There was a keeper visible through the glass doing some normal maintenance in Puzzle’s habitat but no visible issues apparent.

2) Eurasia - I can’t say for sure - but unless they are moving the Red Pandas around I don’t think Paprika was out yesterday. No one was around to ask.
Pemba is still not on exhibit and no footprints (human or animal) in the enclosure to suggest they’re getting it ready or checking on it.

3) Tundra - I finally met Sharon the Heron! After the morning being chased by Juno (per the Facebook post) she was still hanging out above the exhibit on the rocks.

There were also a couple service dogs walking through Tundra and I’ve never seen the wolves so interested.

3) Africa - one of penguins (presumably the one in the wellness centre earlier in the week) was in the room with the other penguins and baby caged off from the others. Presumably to not be bothered while healing. The hyena and cheetah were respectively busy - but the lions were off exhibit.

One final sad update - I’ve been wondering when (if ever) they were going to take down Josephine’s picture and bio in the pavilion. Apparently a year later is the right time. So there is finally a missing picture.

Thanks for the updates and pics @Zooer! Love that one of the wolves looking at the service dog.

Man I really hope the Australasia damage isn't that bad considering construction is still ongoing, the fact that the front half is still closed isn't a good sign.

@ZoeR you saw a penguin chick? More info is a must. Cant drop that and not provide a little more info. Lol. It would be the first chick in several years.

No new chicks. They were saying that an adult penguin (presumably the one that had a medical procedure done recently) was sectioned off with a human baby playpen from the rest of the penguins. Or at least that’s how I interpreted it.

Oh you are probably right @Hyak_II my dyslexic brain read it differently. Bummer. It is breeding season so I was hopefully they were going to let some of the eggs succeed to replace those who passed this year. We can still hope.

Definitely that it was an adult penguin (presumably the one that had the medical procedure recently) rather than a penguin chick. If it had been a new chick that would have warranted a picture for sure!

Lol I did begin to wonder about that after Hyak_II pointed out I misread. Well we can still hope.

Was at the zoo yesterday as well @Zooer !! My first visit with pavilions open in 4 years! And hoping to visit again soon.

I’ll share some notes and thoughts as well!

Watched the quite active Tahr from across the river to begin!

Maybe this is just because I hadn’t been inside in nearly 4 years, but the amount of birds left in the Indian rhino house was shocking! One single egret. Does anyone have any info on why this is?

Sad seeing the Woods pavilion all sectioned off and closed. Really going to miss the clouded leopards. My visit didn’t feel quite the same without them.

Seeing the new False Gharial was great! Very active along with the usually active turtles!

Only saw one Luzon Bleeding Heart, one Pheasant Pigeon and one Mandarin Duck. That area seems empty. But the fish in the aquarium were amazingly active! Very dynamic when they’re moving around like that.

Lot’s of tortoises in the tortoise area! Nice to see it populated!

Can’t figure out the photo thing but I hope you all can see I posted some progress on the Orang outdoor exhibit. Definitely hopeful for a Victoria Day opening in the spring! It’ll be so nice to have multiple of the orang groups visible at the same time! Can’t wait!

Holly was calling for Lenny the entire time I was in the pavilion and I wouldn’t be able to shake the sadness until I encountered young Charlie right up at the viewing window eating some greens. Lenny will be missed no doubt. More positively, having Bucky in that exhibit really makes for dynamic viewing! As always, let’s hope we get more and more mixes as the years progress.

Gorillas were very active! I got right up to the glass with both Charlie and Nneka! Charles is looking OLD.

The no meerkat thing felt weird. Can’t really say more than that. Seeing the naked mole rats in the chameleon nursery was confusing some guests around me and I had to clarify that they were not baby chameleons. Would love to know what the plan is for those guys! Phase out was the plan, but I wonder if things have changed.

Only 3 hogs in the exhibit, none of them looked like dad, so I really hope he’s ok! Was also weird not seeing him. Kind of a theme for this visit.

Don’t love that the Pygmy hippo area is inaccessible. They’re funneling people through the “Great Barrier Reef” (bleh) area in Australasia which is arguably tighter.

Saw both of the Turacos!! I think they’re staying.

Lemur exhibit needs additional species. Point blank. It’s inexcusable wasting all that space. How can we get some Red Ruffed Lemurs added?!

Seeing Mstari pregnant was so exciting! She’s looking big these days. Amazing those legs can support her and the baby!

One cheetah and one baboon were out. All three lions were out snuggled together on their heated pad. Fintan was looking mighty majestic. One hyena was out but was extremely active. I got the best photos of them I’ve ever gotten at the Toronto Zoo. They really are special animals. I wish we could display more together on exhibit, but I understand the realities of the hyena situation. Still frustrating!

The Penguin Reno was really nice to see! Not much happening in their. Everyone was tranquil or sleeping.

The Americas aviary was awesomely active! Lots of Ibises, and the guan, sunbittern, Aracari supporting cast didn’t disappoint. Please make this whole pavilion Tropical America’s new master plan!

Nice to see the Porcupine and Marmoset! The marmoset is looking quite old. Will be sad when they’re gone, but hopefully we can get some Goeldi’s Marmosets, Cotton Top Tamarins or Emperor Tamarins to keep things diverse. Not that’s it’s new, but it’s always nice to see a pair of Saki on exhibit. I’ll never take that for granted after years of seeing one or the other.

No octopus. Only lobster.

Old porcupine exhibit is now home to a boa Constrictor and done up quite nicely! They’ve changed the doors to the otter pump room and have it lit up for guests to see into. Cool.

Not new, but no more black widow spider, eastern Softshell turtle, mata mata turtle or electric eel.

Seeing the lone beaver was weird and unsettling. Didn’t seem as cozy in there with just one.

Even though I didn’t use it, seeing the new Temple/Tundra path was great! Will make great use of that in the summer!

As @Zooer said, the wolves were incredibly active!! And I mean really really intrigued. The support dog seemed to consume them. I’ve never seen them come so close to the barrier, but almost all of them did at one point. Incredible to watch them all move together like a true pack. Nice to have a young, healthy pack after having the oldies in their for years who’s hide all the time. I wonder if the support dog possessed some sort of wisdom or if they viewed it as a prey item. Maybe someone will know something like that!

No foxes, no owls, and barely ever Caribou really drains this area (as has been mentioned). Something must be done. Lots of space here for something imaginative.

All 5 bears were out! The boys in the field yard, the girls in the pool yard and Juno in the den. All were roaming around and foraging. Easily the zoos greatest feature during the winter. (Still needs better underwater viewing though!)

Saw one of the chamois! Spent about 10 minutes looking at it just in case it was the last time. Sad to think that we won’t be able to see some species anymore unless we cross the pond. Oh I longed for the days of European Bison, Japanese Macaques, Dholes and oh yeah… snow leopards! Super weird not seeing anything in that exhibit. Pemba can’t be released soon enough!

Nice to see the Steller’s Sea Eagles using the entirety of their exhibit. Can’t believe they shared a third of the space with Eagle Owls and a keeper space. The addition of the pond and cave are nice touches! Would love to see them breed now!

Only 2 red pandas on display. But oh boy did Vasili put on a show! He is so large and majestic, and I love that the zoo removed all the bamboo along the side and back of the exhibit. Will be nice if they can create a third exhibit or expand the main exhibit into all that space behind - all the way to the red pandas.

Mila ain’t no kitten anymore!

Saw Puzzle through the window, but otherwise that area was shut down. B-lined it through the crowded Barrier Reef and was greeted by the loving face of a wombat. Fiji Iguana pair was nice to see! Didn’t take that for granted. All of the reptile exhibit improvements are so nice! Especially the larger monitor/turtle one. The Fly River turtles remain one of the most underrated exhibits. Love watching them glide through the water!

Goat world is actually pretty great! If the zoo can continue to provide such a great home for rescued goats I’m now totally ok with them using that space! I stand corrected.

Oh! And it was nice to walk through the green house and see some of the zoos plant collection! I’ve been in there many times before, but not as a regular zoo guest. Sadly, one black footed ferret had just finished up a procedure to deal with a pancreatic tumor in the animal hospital.

Wow! Thanks for the huge update @animalman0341! Lots of great stuff to unpack here.

The orang exhibit is slowly but steadily taking form, I'm not expecting anything but my hope is that it'll be ready by Victoria Day or earlier if possible. Of course omicron might steal that from us.

The lemur exhibit has been running on fumes ever since they split the group, I love the lemurs but it's such a huge exhibit and when there's only a few of them in there makes it feel empty. Red or black and white ruffeds please. Or both. Or when the spoonbills move to the gorilla aviary we put the lemurs there and return mandrills to their rightful home so everyone wins. Love to hear you share my frustrations with the hyena situation, maybe someday that'll get worked out. Sigh. Sounds like you got to see Kanzi with how active it was, she's the best!

Definitely share your hope that we get a new species of monkey to replace the marmosets when the last one passes but part of me thinks they'll instead take the manpower that would be used on a third species and instead use it on improving life for the tamarins and sakis. I know they seriously want saki babies and it just hasn't happened yet. The updated exhibit looks fantastic. I'm almost certain the octopus died sometime during Shutdown #2, I didn't see it once this year.

When the coolest thing that's happened to Tundra in years is a wild heron moving in next door you know there's a problem

Thank you again for the detailed update!

@animalman0341, sounds like you got in a good visit.

Sorry cant answer why there are less birds in the Indian rhino house. Only thing I can think of is maybe they had some escape issues. Would be nice if they filled it back up some just to add some other points of interest.

It must have been longer than 4 years that you haven't been in Indo if you think false gharial, Fernando, is new. He's been at the zoo since 2014.

Dont worry about the bleeding heart doves, the zoo does have 5 so even if you didn't just miss someone we could get a new pair going. We have options especially since the 3 chicks come from very valuable parents. The zoo should have 2 pheasant pigeons and sadly down to one Mandarin duck.

I agree it will be weird the first time back and gibbon Lenny wont be there. He, like Puppe, Charles and Holly have all been there since I was a little kid. Just sad to see those childhood friends go. I also will find the gorillas without Josephine weird too. Reality is by the time I feel comfortable heading back to the city those other three old friends might be gone too. Ugh why does time have to pass? Just a reminder that we need to cherish whatever time we have left with these three old timers.

Interesting red river hog Philip was the one MIA. How positive are you with your hog ID skills? Mine wouldn't be good if there is no longer a size difference between him and the boys which given their age is likely.

The pygmy hippos may still be closed off not because of the paths and guest concerns. It might be to keep guests further back from the hippos to keep them safe. Kindia, Harvey and Penny are such valuable animals I dont think they would want to take any kind of risk with them, even more so since the river hippos in Belgium caught covid.

Hard when you havent been in the pavilions in so long and we have seen so many phase outs completed in them in just the last year, forget the last 4 years.

I bet when the wolves saw the service dog they probably viewed it as another wolf who might be a threat to the pack or something like that. Bet it wasnt as much prey because the wolves do see better prey items every day like the alpacas, donkeys and hundreds of small slow humans. A dog is a novel thing for them to see and its canine scent was probably very stimulating for them.

Good news about the sea eagles is they are now both sexually mature or should be. Alik, the male, has been the hold up as he's two years younger than Katya, and they dont mature until they are 6-8 years old. Alik is 8 now so this could be the year. Katya has laid infertile eggs in the past so we know shes good to go and Alik has bred her but he just wasn't there yet.

Did they put down the black footed ferret or just treat it?
