Bronx Zoo Bronx Zoo News 2021

How many Komodo dragons does the Bronx Zoo have on this moment? 2 (1.1) and 6 young, or do they have more?

On December 3rd, the zoo announced they have acquired a (0.0.1) Matschie's tree kangaroo from an undisclosed facility and was focused on an episode of The Zoo that aired on December 4th.

She came from San Diego and in fact had been featured on one of the episodes of Zoo San Diego, so she's made it onto two of the zoo series.

For the first time ever, the zoo has managed to successfully breed Komodo dragons.

This is awesome, especially considering that the first male-female introduction we saw on "The Zoo" resulted in the female biting the male seriously enough to draw blood. I'm not sure, but he may have needed stitches. Part of the problem was that she was bigger than he was at the time.

Updates from my visit today

  • It appears they have 2 baby baboons although one seems a lot older than the other
  • A lot of animals are not outside for the winter including gorillas, rhino, okapi, and giraffes although you can see them inside.
  • I don’t know if it is knew because I hadn’t visited in a while but they have a gorilla indoor holding viewing area
  • No snow leopards were visible in any of the 3 exhibits
  • Monorail and Children’s zoo are closed for winter

Warmer climate species are typically off-exhibit during the winter and the gorillas have always had an indoor winter viewing area. The wall is retractable so it's hidden when the apes are outside.

The monorail and children's zoo have never remained open during the winter season.
