This year marked the fifth annual ZooChat thread of the year competition. It got me thinking about all of the great content that has been produced on this site and how lucky we are to have this community to celebrate it all. So to mark this milestone in the competition history, I entered the previous winners from the past five competitions into this new poll. This includes this years winner @amur leopard, plus past winners @CGSwans, @snowleopard and the user formally known as @lintworm. The community voted all of these threads as champions, but after several years it's time we see which one is the thread of the... uh, half-decade? The nominees are...

CGSwans Flies North for the Winter by @CGSwans

Europe's 50 Must See Zoos by @lintworm

Snowleopards 2019 Road Trip: Netherlands, Belgium, France & Germany by @snowleopard

Into the Unknown: Zoos of Western France by @lintworm

A Guide to the Rarities of Europe by @amur leopard

We will decide the winner in exactly one week, so get to voting!

Since we have so many people who have joined in the last 5 years and may not have read all of these threads, here's the links:

CGSwans flies north for the winter
Europe's 50 must see zoos
Snowleopard's 2019 Road Trip: Netherlands, Belgium, France & Germany
Into the unknown: zoos of western France
A Guide to the Rarities of Europe

They're all quite long, but I highly recommend reading them all before voting! Both so you can be fair, and because they're all fantastic threads that a lot of members liked :)

Agreed - quite apart from anything else, they really do represent some of the best that this forum has to offer, and provide a target for newcomers to aim towards!

Wow, I had completely forgotten about lintworm's France trip thread. I was living in a place with terrible Wi-Fi at the time that couldn't load the thread pages full of photos, so I didn't read it "live" and never got around to doing so after the fact. I'll have to devote some time to it before deciding on this one... plus a solid re-read of the other two travel threads, as it's been a while.

It's interesting to see all 5 winners are thread on Europe. Maybe it's not so surprising, but the fact no America thread win at all is....a bit strange.

And here's all 25 threads nominated distribution by geographic area
Europe: 8(With own thread for Bristol, Welt der Gifte)
Australia: 2.5*
Fantasy: 4
US: 3
Asia:2.5*
worldwide:2 (ZC cup, Chli's penguin thread)
N/A:3 Hipporex prehistoric creature, zf never ending story,Lintworm ungulate taxonomy

(.5 for LD 2018 thread)

I also realized going into this years competition that all of the winning threads are based around European zoos. I was really hoping for @Coelacanth18 taking it this year to finally get some American representation in there, but alas the Europeans beat us out again in the bottom of the ninth. I think the reason for this is all of the big travel threads have involved foreigners going to Europe for mega-zoo trips across several countries and we haven't had any threads that had foreigners coming to America to do a mega-zoo trip. Had @CGSwans been able to fully execute his 2020 American zoo trip, I think that would have been more than enough to secure the win that year.

Hard to say, eventual winner lintworm had his own US trip plans cruelly cancelled at the last moment. My trip would have been longer and more comprehensive, but quantity doesn't always beat out quality.

This was a great poll because it highlighted some of the wonderful work done by zoo nerds on this site. I voted for 'Europe's 50 Must See Zoos' as I've referred to it on countless occasions.

I was going to wait another hour before closing the poll, but there's no way we're going to be seeing any major shifts at this point. With that said, congratulations @lintworm with 'Europes 50 Must See Zoos' for winning the first edition of Thread of the Year Champions! A worthy winner that was a clear choice from the start. In fact, it appears the support of the community has summoned him, as @lintworm logged on today for the first time in nearly a year. Perhaps this will inspire someone to create an American version of this acclaimed thread later this year…

*Foreshadowing*

See you all in another five years to see the next set of champions face off, but before that I'll be back at the end of this year to begin the next thread of the year competition. Thanks again everyone. :)

I have come back to claim my prize :p, thank you all for voting and participating. I would never have thought that my thread would become such a classic. It is an honour to beat a zoochat staple like @snowleopard travel thread or what is in my opinion the best zoo travel thread of them all by @CGSwans . Also a shoutout to @amur leopard , your task was enormous. An interesting thread that you managed to complete, which cannot be said of many other large threads....

There will in all likelihood be a sequel by me, starting soon. That shouls make the 10 year face-off at least remotely interesting:p.
