Zoochat Challenge North America 2022

The Steve Irwin: 5 Australian mammals, 5 Australian birds, and 5 Australian herps. I won’t make you say “Crikey” every time, but I’m sure you’ll find it’s more fun when you do.

The Steve Irwin - 0/5 Mammals 1/5 Birds 0/5 Herps
1. Peregrine Falcon Falco peregrinus

Even though my goal was to not change the challenges after the game had started, I realized upon review that this challenge is phrased far more ambiguously than I intended. Here are the revisions in bold, which should have no effect on the current submissions:

The Steve Irwin: 5 native Australian mammals, 5 native Australian birds, and 5 native Australian herps. 14 of the 15 species must be endemic to the Oceania region - Australia, New Guinea, New Zealand, and the South Pacific. I won’t make you say “Crikey” every time, but I’m sure you’ll find it’s more fun when you do.

@birdsandbats if you want to retract the falcon in favor of saving that freebie for something else I will allow it this time, since it was my error; otherwise you can leave it locked in.

I also changed the Duck Dynasty challenge in my best attempt to deal with the conundrum @Neil chace posed. This should also have no effect on the current submissions.

Duck Dynasty: at least 18 waterfowl (order Anseriformes – ducks and geese, basically). If they are native, they must be signed or in an enclosed aviary to count. The following species do not count for this challenge: Mallard and Canada Goose.

I recognize that still leaves some ambiguity to it, but without retracting species that have already been counted what's done is done. If you know that the waterfowl you're seeing aren't actually captive please don't count them, as it goes against both the rules and the spirit of the challenge.

Very excited for this year! Will definitely require a lot more careful calculations than in the past. I think my favorite aspect of this challenge is that it'll be very easy to revamp and reuse. Who says in the future we can't just make up a new 36 mini-challenges. Definitely a horizon broadener. Excellent work @Coelacanth18

I'm happy I could provide the inspiration for this and I do hope I can figure out how to make my original idea work on a global scale (or even national scale in the future). Seeing how well people do with keeping track of multiple and seemingly random lists of animals will be useful, as it potentially opens the door for more challenging, well, challenges in the future.

@Coelacanth18 See if you can get One-Zoo Wonder by completing The Coelacanth Stamp of Approval. ;) If you can do it you've found the best zoo ever, right?

If there were such a zoo I'd be living there already :p unfortunately, I'm almost certain such a zoo does not exist in North America. There's at least 1 or 2 species on there whose distribution is well-documented, and AFAIK all of them are missing at least one of the others.

Indeed; this is a somewhat experimental concept, and we are the guinea pigs for working out the kinks. Regardless of how well it goes it'll at least interesting and informative!

I'll leave the falcon on for now I guess, I don't really see any reason to take it off.

Of course, I know of zoos keeping legitimate captive Mallards, so maybe not counting Mallards isn't the best option? I guess I don't see an alternative though.

I excluded the two most common species that could be signed but actually be wild. It's the best I've got for now and I don't want to revise that challenge multiple times. There should be plenty of other waterfowl to get though, in addition to 35 other challenges.

Wow, this will be a pain to keep track of...

I briefly visited Bay Beach Wildlife Sanctuary today. My main focus was birding so I missed most of the exhibits, but I did see a few captive species:

So close :p had I stuck with my rough draft version of that challenge - which lacked the two venomous lizards - you would have gotten it.

4. Fat-tailed Scorpion Androctonus amoreuxi/australis
(@Coelacanth18 Can I count that? It was one of the two species listed, and they can only be told apart by precise body measurements)

I'll allow it on the genus level, on the condition that you don't count any other species from that genus.

I think Komodo Dragon will be pretty hard for me to get this year, so that trial may be sitting like that for the whole year, tantalizingly close yet so far.

Or maybe I'll get lucky. ;)

In all my years on ZooChat, this is my first shot at one of these challenges.

Yes! The Africans have a dedicated exhibit near the children's zoo, and the Magellanics are signed and displayed alongside the kings and rockhoppers in Wings of the World.

Bona Fide Rarity Hunter: see at least 3 species exhibited by only 1 zoo in the US and Canada (can only count 1 species per zoo)

Rules: The determination for “exhibited by only 1 zoo in the US and Canada” will be failure for myself or anybody else (ZCCNA participant or not) to provide evidence that another zoo in those countries does not currently exhibit the species, or exhibited the species since at least 2018 and possibly still does. In other words, it must be more or less indisputably exhibited by only one zoo in the region. People are allowed to challenge based on firsthand knowledge or any public source, including any valid source on ZooChat or anything from the zoo’s website or social media. People are not allowed to challenge based on anything that is not public – ex. private correspondences with others or with the zoo. Absolutely no genus-level or higher IDs will be allowed for this trial, it *must* be species-level.
Another question about this trial - if the species is only exhibit by one zoo, but is kept bts by another zoo, does it count for this trial?
