Zoochat Challenge North America 2022

Ringed Sawback does not count for Slow and Steady. The challenge is tortoises only (family Testudinidae) and the native species by default has to be a member of the genus Gopherus.
Thanks misread the challenge, must not have forgot them but actually read the challenge correctly.

After looking through the birds at the El Paso Zoo, there are a few that meet the criteria for the Steve Irwin

The Steve Irwin: 0/5 Mammals, 2/5 Birds, 0/5 Herps
Masked lapwing Vanellus miles
Metallic starling Aplonis metallica

Definitely not how I expected to start, but I was in Philly and the zoo was closed so.

Per the revised version of the rule, you can only count one of the sea turtles since neither of them are endemic to Oceania. Feel free to count whichever one for now, and if you see another native non-endemic you'd rather use you can swap it out.

Record keeping for this particular challenge is kind of wild and unwieldy. Time will tell if I am gonna be up for the work involved.

That's totally understandable, and it was the chief problem I anticipated people having with this year's challenge. Whether this is an inherent flaw of a scavenger hunt-style challenge I'm not sure; I thought creating themed challenges would help people keep track of them better, but it's still a large task either way.

There are two things I will say. First, while I hope to continue incorporating new and innovative ideas into these challenges, my tentative plan for 2023 is to return to doing a more single-focus taxonomic and/or geographic challenge per the norm - both to mix things up from year to year and also to give myself and others a break after this one.

Second, I've been considering the possibility of adding an alternative 2022 North America challenge for those who find this one too daunting, chaotic or unmanageable for them - as I've said, this year's challenge is partly an experiment and I thought having backup options might be necessary. I don't have anything firmed up yet, but if I do end up making something on the side I will announce it here and reach out to anyone who expresses interest.

Fun fact I just worked out for no reason other than curiosity - if it were possible to score points in the UK, the maximum possible score would be 34/36 :P

No Bird-of-Paradise, no Indian Gharial?

Edit: 33/36 it seems... does the UK really only have 3 species of rattlesnake on display, and only at one zoo each?

Lucky you. I worked out New Zealand and I think it is 7/36.

The Meerkat one, Polly one, Sharknado, Kraken, NZ Easy (easily), Steve Irwin, and probably the One Zoo Wonder challenge given that the Steve Irwin one is for "Oceania" so covers NZ species as well (edit: I did the Sharknado one last year at Napier's National Aquarium, so that would work for the One Zoo Wonder).

Well, strictly speaking it is Australian; my revision was that all but one of the 15 species had to be endemic to Oceania, but all 15 must be native to Australia specifically. I did this so as not to rule out species like Little Blue Penguin, Green Tree Python, Cassowary, and Short-beaked Echidna that are also found in New Guinea or other islands in the region. Is NZ still well-covered with that factored in?

(So as a clarification to anybody participating: NZ, New Guinea, or Pacific island endemics *do not* count for Steve Irwin - it has to be from Australia and can also be from those countries.)

Oh, I completely misunderstood your modification! In that case it could be still be done in NZ but not at a single zoo.

Yep, I'd missed the mention of it having to be both Indian *and* Sunda Gharial :p it was the BoP and rattlesnakes that I was thinking of.

It only vaguely occurred to me that I wasn't sure how many rattlesnakes were in the UK - I know venomous snakes aren't flush there in general - but I was really shocked by that. After passing through all of the ZTL listings, it seems rattlesnakes are a lot rarer in Europe as a whole than I would have guessed!

A quick comparison: there are at least 15 species in the United States that are definitely or probably kept in the double-digits (out of maybe 30 species total), while there's only 6 in Europe. Of those 6, all are held in my country and only one - Uracoan Rattlesnake - is not one of those 15 I mentioned. This is on top of the vast majority of European holdings being specialist facilities, while the places I'm counting in the US are largely just general zoos and aquariums.

I must admit, I thought the Edgar Allen Poe one was also impossible, due to a New World jay being required, but then I found that there are a very small handful in UK zoos.
