Monterey Bay Aquarium Major deep sea animal exhibit coming to MBA

Yeah but I feel like making a tank large enough for a 130ft long string of goo is easier than finding a way to keep it a 130ft string of goo.

You do realize the open ocean panes are only 90 feet long right? So 40 feet shorter than potential length of Praya dubia? Also if they're exhibiting Bloody-belly comb jellies and mauve stingers I think they've got keeping deepwater goo down.

Might be a stretch but maybe they found out how to aquaculture Praya Dubia? They already did it with the Hula Skirt Siphonophore, so there could be a chance they did it with the Giants too. They could do a thing where they rotate the Juvenile p. Dubia on display when the previous ones get too big, which would be super amazing for a number of reasons

Thank goodness I'm getting my Driver's license this month + don't live that far away cause everytime they rotate the animals, i might drive down just for that l

Yes, along with the Bloodybelly Comb Jelly, Mooderia Rotunda, OG the Salmom Snailfish, Bone Eating Worms, Siphonophores I think? I hope those are there for the Grand Opening but maybe they'll keep them for one of the next rotations.

Also YES! The some of these were out of no where, but MBA is just doing doing MBA does in keeping the impossible successfully. Unfortunately I don't think we'll see much of the Sea Cucumber light up cause they need to be disturbed I believe for that to happen, but whoever does see it is going to be extremely lucky and amazed

And, if I remember right, the Giant Larvacean!

Also, something important to note about P. dubia is that it's ultimately made of many, many zooids. It's a chain, and a chain that can still function perfectly well at shorter lengths - I'd assume they just need to obtain a small individual and they can probably fit it in a medium-sized Kreisel.

Ohhh that's a good point. It'll be interesting to see if they do have one on display at one point

MBA also said on their Facebook that they'll release the dates for the Members Only Preview next month. I'd love to go to one, although idk if they allow filming during those

So I was bored and had an idea of looking up articles surrounding the announcement of the opening date yesterday, and I did come across some pretty interesting stuff.
It looks like MBA did a conference with different (mostly) local news outlets and here is the layout that most of the articles say:
"
"Into the Deep" takes people on an exploration through exhibits of living deep-sea animals, interactive exhibits, and multimedia experiences:

  • Entering "Into the Deep": The exhibition starts with a transition from light-filled surface waters to a darker, deeper realm below.
  • "Diving" down to the deep, guests discover how life at the surface depends on life far below, explore the geography of Monterey Bay's spectacular underwater canyon, and meet the scientists, engineers, marine operators, and communicators at MBARI, which is a global leader of deep-sea exploration. Guests are then introduced to many of the unique animals of the deep sea through an immersive 4K video experience.
  • The Midwater: Moving into a world of twilight, then midnight, visitors encounter delicate and beautiful animals that are perfectly evolved to survive in a world without light or boundaries, including the bloody-belly comb jelly and bioluminescent animals. Guests can immerse themselves in a bioluminescence experience with never-before-seen video footage and play an interactive video game that educates about midwater survival along with the serious problems plastic pollution causes animals that make their home here.
  • The Seafloor: Finishing their "descent," visitors come face-to-face with species that make their home in the seafloor habitats, including giant spider crabs, bone-eating worms, and giant isopods and get up close to hydrothermal vent and whalefall communities.
  • As visitors metaphorically return to the "surface," they see the questions researchers still have about the deep sea and how much scientists are still learning with updates from MBARI explorations. "

so this was the norm for all most all the articles I saw, but this one by the Secret San Francisco ( A New Exhibition Of Rare Deep-Sea Creatures Is Coming To The Monterey Bay Aquarium ) added a little bit more which really intrigued me. "he exhibition takes you deeper and deeper into the ocean’s depths, starting with the Midwater, which features an amazing bioluminescence room with a collection of glowing creatures such as angler fish, siphonophores, and red crown jellies. "
I'm not sure if they said this because they're just examples of bioluminescent animals, but if they are going to be on display at some point. that brings my hype level EVEN HIGHER

Also I think someone mentioned this earlier in the thread but from the articles, a majority of the animals that are going to be on display will be the 1st time they've ever been on display, and some are entirely new to science / undescribed. It'll be super interesting to see what the undescribed species are

  • Hydrothermal vent species? That'll be exciting to see! afaik no vent species have ever been kept before, it will be interesting to see how they will manage to keep those!

The mention of the possible anglerfish gets me excited - especially as it's mentioned that it's the bioluminescent kind! If we're lucky, that might set a precedent for other deep-sea open water animals like fangtooth and dragonfish!
Yeah, it will be interesting to see what that anglerfish would be. Not the first time bioluminescent anglers have been kept in aquariums, Numazu Deep Sea Aquarium had a footballfish species (I believe Pacific Footballfish?) briefly, but it was in terrible condition and, I assume, died shortly after the video was taken. Hopefully Monterey Bay Aquarium will be able to keep anglers better than this!

I remember there was a render of one but a lot of people brushed it over since keeping the water that hot sounds insanely difficult, but maybe they did do it! I'm super excited to see if they have things like tube worms and squat lobsters on display .

Woah, I didn't know that Pacific Footballfish was ever kept in Japan! If MBA does have a deep sea anglerfish species, then I would assume that would be the species.

I found this article by Wired from a few weeks ago, they followed
them on a collecting trip. They have some small clips and info on some species they collected that might be on exhibit including:

-Umbrella Comb Jelly
-Golf Tee Jelly
-Christmas Tree Siphonophore
-And a new undescribed species of Comb Jelly that looks pretty sweet. They don't know anything about it yet (when the article came out) but it seems like that's just 1 of an unknown amount of undescribed species they'll have on display

This is one of the coolest things I've seen in a while. Thank you for sharing the article. This makes me even more excited for the upcoming exhibition.

So a species list so far from animals that are confirmed / possibly going on display from what different reports have said:
CONFIRMED = The Aquarium has publicly said these animals will be on Display / showed off behind the scenes, probably meaning they'll be on Display
HINTED AT = The Aquarium / MBARI have mentioned them in wording that sounds like they'll most likely be on Display
SPECULATED = Mentioned in different news articles, such as the most recent ones and theres big suspicion they will be on Display.

Coral
-Bubblegum Coral (HINTED AT)

Hydrothermal Vent Inhabitants
We don't actually know if there will be Hydrothermal Vent Species or maybe counterparts that are easier to keep as the articles only mention there will be a Hydrothermal Vent exhibit, but if they are actual Hydrothermal Vent Species we can expect things like:
-Squat Lobsters
-Shrimp Species
-Crab Species
-Hydrothermal Worms
So I'll just put this whole category as SPECULATED

It is odd to me that no cephalopods are mentioned so far, given the aquarium has previously kept flapjack octopus and vampire squid. I would think at least one or two species would make it in.

Now that you mention it, yeah it is kind of weird. I'm kind of thinking maybe they're saving the Cephalopods for Tentacles? But that would be kind of a waste imo since the reason they only had things like the Flapjack and Vampire on display for a few days at a time was because of the light (from an MBARI article) and then they would go back BTS so theoretically the new exhibit would be a perfect opportunity

Either way I hope we see new Cephalopods, like the Strawberry Squid. Those are so cool
