'Batak', a Sumatran male at Tierpark Hagenbeck, has been moved to Wilhelma. This is only a temporary move until another collection can house him in the future. During his time at Hamburg, he successfully sired 1:0 offspring ('Berani').

From Facebook: In March 2022, female Bornean, Cantic, will move from Usti Nad Laben to Rostock. Her mother, Nuninka, will move to Kristiansand in April.

To show that these moves never happen until they happen, I have a note from April 2020 that both orangs were to move to Auckland that year, and that Sungay from Madrid and Daya from Rhenen would arrive.

I think the decision has something to do with the current Usti orang house being outdated.

Martina, one of the 2 remaining hybrid orang-utans at Bioparco di Roma has passed away aged 33, due to heart and endocrine diseases. The zoo have stated they are currently working with EAZA to bring in a companion for their single remaining hybrid female, Zoe.

Does anyone know wich species of Orangutans are going to take residence in Plankendael? And from where the individuals are arriving?

An architect’s draft of the exhibit has stated the orangutans will most likely be of the Bornean species. The other two zoos in Belgium exhibiting orangutans have the Sumatran species, but an import from other countries within Europe is likely.

I’d love to see a full list of Bornean orangutans in Europe if anyone has the time or the inclination.

The best I can find is a couple of lists from 2017 and 2018, neither of which list the orangutan’s DOB or parentage. There’s around 170, so I acknowledge it’d be something of a mission.

If you scroll up 5 posts, @Gigit states they will receive Sumatran orangutans from Basel and Bratislava.

A shame I would have preferred Bornean, with the history in the Antwerp zoo and the unicum in Belgium. Then again The Sumatran have less holders in EU. And if you like to see Bornean there a plenty relatively close alternatives In Germany.

Is it known what is happening with Silvestre at Monkey World? He is now 12 years of age,and will naturally try and Dominate his Foster Mum Oshine. With testorone pumping Silvestre could unintentionally injure the Nurserys younger occupants. A few years ago Jin another of the Orangutan Nursery was moved to Wingham due to the reasons I have said. If Jin was moved because of aggression and domernering behaviour, surely Silvestre should be. Silvestre is 4 years older than Jin was and is a Sumatran Orangutan. This means Silvestre is a greater risk to the infants in the Nursery not just because of age but also size. Bornan Orangutans like Jin are smaller than their Sumartrain counterparts.

No, they aren't.

@TeaLovingDave I always thought Sumatran Orangutans were bigger than Bornean Orangutans. Thanks for teaching me a new fact. I apologise for the mistake.
If anything Sumatrans are smaller, at least their body shape is generally lighter than the much more weighty Borneans- in both sexes. I think Silvestre is likely to stay where he is at MW until such time as somewhere else might be allocated by EEP to take him. More than harming or bullying his contemporaries though, I'd be more concerned about accidental breeding- I presume they have controls but accidents can happen. So they might eventually need to seperate him.
