North American Common Hippopotamus Population

No worries at all, thanks so much for the help Tim! You're amazing and we all appreciate you! :D

This is indeed a mystery though! My best guess is perhaps her parentage was previously published in the studbook as a best guess type of scenario and then "corrected" later on and changed to unknown. Genuinely though, I have no idea. Might be worth emailing the facilities about, Disney at least has been incredibly transparent with me in communications before!

Honestly your answer is good enough for me. Worst case dont breed her to any descendants of Ramona or Panch and you are good.

Here is the recent (12/4/2021)

Thank you! I will add them to the list. :D

Theres also a population of 3 in Puerto Rico in two different facilities
Zoo Dr. Juan A. Rivero
  • Cindy (F) is 53
  • Jeronimo (M) is 57
Parque de la Ciencia
  • Tommy (M) is 49
Theres no official records for any of them and I find their ages hard to believe and both facilities have been closed since 2017. But I do have confirmation that all 3 are still alive.

Hi, I'm RhinoHippoElephantGiraffe, and this is my first ZooChat post. Here is a list of American zoos that have eliminated river hippo exhibits since 1990. Let me know if I missed any or I got one or more wrong.
Jackson Zoo - 1990
Cameron Park Zoo - 1993
Houston Zoo - 1995
Virginia Zoo - 1996
Oklahoma City Zoo - 1998
Maryland Zoo - 2001
Central Florida Zoo - 2003
Sacramento Zoo - 2004
Utah's Hogle Zoo - 2005
Fresno Chaffee Zoo - 2005
Riverbanks Zoo - 2008
Smithsonian's National Zoo - 2009
Detroit Zoo - 2011
Brookfield Zoo - 2012
Mesker Park Zoo - 2012
Oregon Zoo - 2018
Dickerson Park Zoo - 2020
Birmingham Zoo - 2020
San Francisco Zoo - 2021

Zoos I think that could be eliminating common/nile/river hippo exhibits:
- Los Angeles Zoo (Maybe this year.)
- Homosassa Springs Wildlife State Park (Probably before 2026 and will not replace Lu.)
- Woodland Park Zoo (Most likely by 2025. They have a mediocre exhibit, and have announced plans to phase out hippos.)
- Sedgwick County Zoo (Probably 2035 at the VERY latest. Their hippos are females aged 50 and 51.)
- Denver Zoo (Questionable for time, but they don't have a suitable hippo exhibit. Also, Mahali is 19 years old, which is a perfect breeding age.)
- Milwaukee County Zoo (By 2040, unless they get more hippos. They have 2 hippos aged 53 and 41 years old.)
- Honolulu Zoo (Most likely won't replace 31 year old Louise after she dies.)

I highly doubt Milwaukee will be going out of Hippos in the near future. They just completed their new Hippo exhibit a year or two ago and will most likely be replacing their Hippos once they pass away.

Los Angeles Zoo is in the process of phasing out hippos in their current exhibit (if they ever finish and approve their Master Plan it should include a new hippo exhibit). Rosie moved to Disney's Animal Kingdom late last year. Her mother, Mara, is supposed to move to Honolulu Zoo.

Which means Honolulu Zoo will not go out of common hippo then!

I think San Diego needs a new bull hippo. Personally, I think that Hans from DAK should move to SDZ to breed with Amahle (Funani is 38 and might no longer be a suitable animal to breed, and Amahle has a wild-born father.)

Mahali of the Denver Zoo, Omo of the Cheyenne Mountain Zoo, or Timothy of the San Antonio Zoo would also be good breeding partners for Amahle.

I do hope you are right and the AZA/SSP is planning to be more ambitious around breeding common hippo. For now, what I do know there is a lot of non breeding recs as well as separatie the sexes.

I genuinely believe San Diego won’t be looking for a new bull anytime soon. Amahle is not even two yet so there’s still 4-5 years until she’s sexually mature.

San Diego also has limited space and I doubt they’d be able to manage three seperate groups if they keep Funani into the future.

Mahali is an option, but I don’t see Denver phasing out their last hippo.

Omo is a young hippo, but might be perfect for Amahle as they’ll reach sexual maturity around the same time and could be San Diego’s breeding pair for the next few decades.

You're right. Omo should move to SDZ in the spring of 2023 to be a potential mate for Amahle. I can't see Funani having more calves, since she's 38 now.

2024 is the earliest Omo will be moved on. He’s only 6 months now so could still live with his group until he first becomes sexually mature, which could be at the age of 3 at earliest.

Funani is 38 and we’ll represented so I, too, don’t believe she’ll be bred from again. But then again, females can produce calves into their 40’s and if San Diego really want to breed from Funani again, it could be done.
