Los Angeles Zoo & Botanical Gardens Los Angeles Elephant Sanctuary

I disagree with the space per elephant ratio. Naturally elephants live in herds, so I much rather see 8 elephants on 2.5 acres than 3 elephants on 2.5 acres. The social setting is more important than the size of the habitat.
 
And equally important: what are a zoo's plans to use the acreage?
You can simply let the animals out to do what they want, and they may just want to stand in the shade and not move, or you can use enrichment and training to keep them moving (several of the new elephant exhibits are incorporating such plans).

Elephants not using 10 acres are not going to be more fit than elephants using every bit of 3 acres.
 
Zooplantman your 100% correct. I know San Diego is designing Elephant Odyssey to keep the elephants active, which is the primary goal of the exhibit. Keeping the elephants active will keep them healthy and thus they will live longer. All the elephants that will be living in Elephant Odyssey will be old, the oldest being 60 year-old Sunita and the youngest being Devi at 32. I know that all the Asian Elephants at WAP are all above age 45.
 
Great article Allen. I really hope Pachyderm Forest gets completed as it sounds like one of the most fantastic elephant exhibits. I hate that there has to be people to ruin something so awesome like zoos. :(

I believe we should win, since it's the same information that was given back in 2006 from both sides. Nothing has changed, other than one of the Councilmembers (Cardenas) switching sides.

Both the TRUTH and the momentum is on our side, so we SHOULD win. But what worries me is that the vote in December was 13-2 to stop the construction. Six of those 13 will need to support our side.

I know that they voted to halt the construction until the final vote (which is tomorrow), but I didn't know it was that bad.

There was a meeting today, but I haven't heard anything yet.

Hopefully we'll win but usually the zoo overthrows activists unfortunately, when elephants were to be imported to Australia and few years ago, there was a large group of protesters in Taronga zoo against the importation of the elephants. But hopefully there is a better chance here!

Do you want them to complete the exhibit or not? You are really unclear.

Don't forget that was before they reviewed all the jobs that would be lost and the cost of snubbing the project. In November it seemed more like the activist would win, but the zoo has gained tons of support since then and presented more experts like Jack Hanna, so hopefully with all this the zoo will win.
I will be saying my prayers!
