Meerkats are extremely, painfully common in North American zoos so I'm a little confused by the above comments
Far more than Bobcats are, at least in major facilities.

There are only around 80 US keeping Meerkats. Common, but not super common. Bobcats on the other hand are kept at around 330 US zoos. They're probably the most common zoo animal in the country, and more than 4 times as common as Meerkats. @TinoPup's numbers of the approximate number of holders of several common ungulate, carnivore, and marsupial species may be of interest:Meerkats are extremely, painfully common in North American zoos so I'm a little confused by the above commentsFar more than Bobcats are, at least in major facilities.

Meerkat was a weird choice though, given they're far from ubiquitous in the US
Still a weird animal to claim that it’s ubiquitous in the US.

I usually only see them at 2 or 3 zoos a year. I would have made the challenge to see a bunch of Bobcats or Black-tailed Prairie Dogs.

Most common species in Zoos?
I know, but is "extremely, painfully common" really at all close to accurate? I don't think so.I said major zoosNon-AZA facilities are unlikely to keep Meerkats, whereas just about anywhere can keep Bobcats. But AZA zoos are also the ones 90+% of us are going to be visiting more often than not.

Looking back over my species list for this trip and reviewing my post ths morning, I noticed a glaring exclusion from my update! I double checked my tracking document to find that the fully updated file didn't autosave when I closed out, so I accidentally missed a species when I was putting the update together last night. The final entry for the Caldwell Zoo should actually be:Today was a double zoo day!

As both a very competitive person and a perfectionist, it has not stopped bothering me that I had repeat species from my initial visit to the Dallas World Aquarium... So I am happy to say that my visit to the Ellen Trout Zoo today has allowed me to rid myself of the repeats, replacing the lesser bird-of-paradise (Paradisaea minor), Pesquet's parrot (Psittrichas fulgidus), and red-tailed black cockatoo (Calyptorhynchus banksii) in the "The Steve Irwin" challenge with the Australian wood duck (Chenotta jubata), laughing kookaburra (Dacelo novaeguineae), and tawny frogmouth (Podargus strigoides)!
You too?

Oh, I knowWhatever floats your boatI'm not keeping track of everybody's individual species, so it makes zero difference to me.
Before my new update, a couple housekeeping things:
1. Because of how long many of these posts are, I think it would be a good idea if people started utilizing the spoiler function. This is a great feature we have on our forum for condensing large amounts of information in a way that makes them accessible to whoever wants to view them without greatly extending the page length for those who don't. You can find it on the post ribbon to the left of the camera, as one of the "Insert" options; just copy the text you want in spoiler and then select "Insert Spoiler".
From now on I will be using spoiler text for most of my updates; I hope everyone else does the same, especially for those of you who re-post your entire list every time.
2. Remember to only count up to the minimum needed for each challenge. If you saw 8 sharks and only needed 4, label it 4/4 and give me a list of 4 species. If you want to add a note about the other 4 species you saw, that's fine - but don't give me an 8/4 and a straight list of 8 species because it may create confusion about what's needed for the challenge.
And a couple quick taxonomy notes:
- Blue Poison Dart Frog (sometimes incorrectly signed as Dendrobates azureus) and Dyeing Poison Dart Frog (Dendrobates tinctorius) are the same species, with Blue being a color morph - so don't count them separately.
Smithsonian Zoo, Feb 11
- Orangutans are one of the animals where I'll count it at genus level if needed; a lot of zoos have hybrids or a mix of hybrid and subspecific, so if you see any orangutan just count it and don't worry about the ID.
