North American Pygmy Hippo Population

As of 2020, Rum Creek had 71 (19.49.3) pygmy hippos in its care. Obviously since then the number could have gone up or down. With that many hippos lots of change is possible. Since the first birth there I could find in 2007 they have been pumping out calves like nobodies business. Approximately 50 hippos born in that time, that are still there. Im sure some have moved on too.

Here is the recent (12/5/2021) Pygmy Hippo population.

The Global Captive Pygmy Hippo Population

This document keeps a record of all births, deaths, locations, and transfers of all Pygmy Hippos Globally. This document will be constantly updated to make sure that the information provided is as accurate as possible. Feel free to leave any new information in the comments of this thread.

The facilities are organized by country, then in alphabetical order by the name of the facility. The individuals were organized by age.

Note: I do know the parents for most of the individuals, but because I couldn't find the actual names and didn't want to refer to them as numbers, I just labeled them unknown.

This is sort of explained in the article @Javier Iniguez provided:

The description in the article matches up with what @nczoofan is seeing on Google Maps: most likely a complex of large enclosures.

The ranch is apparently owned by a billionaire named Brad Kelley (Wikipedia article: Brad M. Kelley - Wikipedia), so it may not require a constant revenue stream from outside sources. I found an article talking both about him and Rum Creek, which states that the facility is one of three Florida facilities that manage species in a consortium for reintroduction to Kenya (which would explain the large number of bongos at least): Where the bongos and bantengs roam
I recently came across an action packed application by CCTU that gives a better insight into the facility. The document is from early 2018 and lists the complete inventory for CCTU at the time along with documentation for its facilities. These are top notch and extensive. Since they focus on a dozen or so species only husbandry and management are exemplary with a highly experienced staff. Their focus in part is also repatration to range countries. The owner is a billionaire self proclaimed believer in what he creates at Rum Creek and another facility in Texas I believe without wishing to be in the limelight. I think it is magnificent what they do.

Malayan tapir ca. 10
Lowland tapir 35+
Southern white rhino 40+
Black rhino 3 out on loan
Indian rhino 10+ in on loan
Northern babirusa 2
Javan banteng 275+
Lowland anoa 150+
Red lechwe waterbuck 110+
Pygmy hippo not mentioned here

They work with AZA, ZAA and SEZARC in Yulee for cryo gene banking and reproductive studies. Repatration for bongo and anoa actively pursued. The figure for pygmy hippo is certainly now well beyond the 80+ mark.

According to their website it's Hannah with an H at the end. Any idea how she ended up there??
Female Hannah was transferred from San Diego Zoo to a private ranch owner in 1996 and in the early 2002 ended up at Fund for Animals. So, really she has been around this place for quite a long time.

A young Pygmy Hippo will be arriving at the Brookfield Zoo in the near future. I don't know exactly which one will be moving in though.
It would be nice if you credited people for their information (@MeiLover posted this in the Brookfield thread) especially when the information wasn’t announced by the zoo itself. Remember it’s always good to post a source for news you are posting… you were just told this yesterday ;)

Nonetheless, this is exciting news! I’m glad Brookfield is getting back into the species instead of phasing them out. My guess is Akobi from SDZ but there are numerous young animals in the population so it’s anyone’s guess who it will be.
