Chester Zoo Chester Zoo Discussion and Questions 2022

Does anyone know if a new species has been added to the old Bush dog enclosure by the red pandas because until she passed away quite recently adaze the zoos last female cheetah died does anyone if any new species has taken over that enclosure and speaking of cheetahs what happened to KT and safi
I think cheetahs might still be signed there but if someone can confirm that would be appreciated, either way I have not seen anything in there for a good while so it may well be empty.

Would they move the cheetah up to the African savannah from where they are held now (or has this never been the intention)?

I very much liked the current design (yurt and interpretation area) and location next to the Persian onager. That siting may have been intentional as a linkage to Central Asia and highly threatened Asiatic cheetah (yes, I know they have North-East African cheetah soemmerringi)!

What cheetah are currently held? (I don't mean sub-species; what individuals. Haven't visited for a while and increasingly frustrated by the omerta over what is held.)

I remember hearing somewhere that there was plans to move the cheetahs to the former bush dog and muntjac area temporarily and the African wild dogs would be moved to the current cheetah exhibit while there would be work on Grasslands. Maybe I'm misremembering or things have changed however but I would guess that when Grasslands is complete the cheetahs would stay where they are now.

When I went last September, Adaze wasn't in the old Bush Dog enclosure nor was there any signage for Cheetahs. I believe the zoo only have 2 males left in the main enclosure.

Yes chester zoo are running out of cheetahs because the 2 boys that are left are elderly so I think soon chester may get some young cheetahs in so they can get breeding again because they haven't had cubs in 9 years now however the two boys may be old but they're still strong because last time I went they were chasing a squirrel around the enclosure

Quick question are all areas of the collection open yet including all the bird walk thru areas please?

Im going tomorrow so I'll give you an update
Also I think the cattle house and fruit bat forest are the only two indoor areas that are closed because the cattle House is quite narrow and the bat cave has the rubber flaps which would have to be constantly cleaned

Does anyone know if the Congo buffalo herd is still breeding because I remember when I went a few years ago there seemed to be a new calf every time I went

There is no reason to close these areas off now that covid restrictions have been lifted/

To be fair, there is no legal reason to close off these areas. Doesn't mean the zoo can't choose to do it for safety, or for other animal welfare reasons - as at any time.

You are correct Maguari. Areas are often closed and for many reasons.

They are no longer breeding. I can't access my records at the moment but I think the last birth was a female in 2014.
