Bristol Zoo Project Wild Place News 2022

Local press reporting today that Wild Place will add 2 Black Rhino at some point in the future as part of their plans to develop into Bristol Zoo

Here’s the local news article on Bristol Post - many thanks to Clunes for sharing this news originally.

I’m looking forward to hearing more from the Zoo on their species plans as they announce them.

Does anyone happen to have the original PDF plans for each of the zones for the National Conservation Centre or whatever it was being called before it became the much reigned-in Wild Place?

I used to have them on an old laptop years and years ago but not sure if I can even still access them anymore and would love to have a look at the plans again!

I have a folder with 28 documents on my PC. If you send me a PM with your e-mail address, I can send you copies.

I'd love to see them too - I had them printed out once upon a time, but they have long since vanished. I'll PM you, if I may

now here's an interesting theory of mine:
Perhaps when the Wild Place becomes the Bristol Zoo of 2024, it will enable it as so to be more able of fulfilling the original masterplan?
In that case, we could see several of the original 'masterplan' species being fulfilled in the future! [And hopefully the manatees]

I’d say the chances of the master plan becoming reality is fairly good - as from what I see, the Bear Woods was part of the plan - this leads my optimism to believe it is only a matter of time until other species of the plan [manatees potentially included] join the collection.

AMBITIOUS GOAL: "663,000 visitors on the completion of Phase 1 in early 2024". Current annual attendance hovered under 300,000 (pre Covid).[/QUOTE]
If they get manatees possibly, a small herd but any thing else has probably been done and won’t double the attendance of any place, good luck but it’s a bit ambissious

Mmm..
I'd think that even if manatees are not to join in Phase 1, people would still go here as it is the new Bristol Zoo..
Of course it may be a bit ambitious perhaps

When the old Zoo closes it will reduce the local animal park choices from three to two, so people will definately visit, no matter what the collection houses. I'm sure many of the problems surrounding access will be addressed too. Gradually the old zoo site (in whatever form it takes) will just fade into the realms of history in local residents' minds.

@Pertinax surely Bristol Zoo will loose money during the relocation pierord. I imagine the punters will visit Noah’s Ark Zoo Farm, these days Noah’s have more species with the exception of the Gorillas. The only draw back of Noah’s I have heard about is that is is highly religious and mentions the bible at every turn. I have never visited Noah’s so cannot comment from a personal prospective.

Mmm..
From what I have heard, even though Noah's Ark Zoo Farm is religious by nature [no surprises there], the zoo is structured in a way in so that much of the religious aspects are easy to avoid and are subtle - say inconsequential signs with a verse of the Bible, or the fact that the room featuring a to-scale replica of Noah's Ark is not inherently mandatory to go through - though some of the information presented has hints of religion - from what I have heard, the signs do casually mention 'animal kinds', and the animal presentations, from what I have heard, do have religious commentary.
In other words, the idea I get is that the religious aspect of the zoo is so-so, and that anyone truly insulted by a day at the zoo would maybe be similarly insulted if they happened to pass by a church..!

Except a church is just that, a place a worship with a clear agenda. This is missionary activity that seeks to influence people under the guise of a normal family day out. I don't find this insulting but I do find it sinister and at odds with the scientific and educational ethos of any good, modern zoo.

Agreed their approach is unhelpful when zoos are about science, methodology, husbandry management and education cum conservation awareness. NAFZ sends out a confused message there.

If I would like to contemplate ethics and morality of religion that is a completely different arena and setting (church temple ... et cetera) and hence out of place in a zoo ... no disrespect to anyone.
