Sadly Puppe likely won’t ever be paired in a social group again. Her reproductive days are long behind her, and considering her only offspring still living with her is now a flanged mature male, I would say the chances of her being reintroduced with him are slight at best. She’s also very old at this point, and introducing her to feisty younger orangutans could potentially go not so well for her. Not to say it’s impossible, hypothetically she could potentially be introduced to Sekali and Budi again, especially once they have the space of the outdoor exhibit and Budi being a mature male, could act as a mediator between the two, but I think the chances of that are very low.

That's most likely how anything will go down if they are to reintroduce Puppe to her new grouping. But as stated by @Hyak_II it will probably not happen as Ramai and Sekali will be in protective mother mode for the next 6-7 years as well...

Little long legs is a boy! And a big boy at that.
What is this? A giraffe I am assuming?

So many posts in the Toronto forums are strings of personal names for animals, which is less than helpful for anyone else trying to know what is happening at this zoo.

@Chlidonias, little long legs is indeed the zoo's newest giraffe calf. It's the nickname the zoo is going with until he is named.

Judging by Dolf’s (the CEO) Instagram, little long legs (male giraffe calf) has been introduced to his older sister in the backstage area of the exhibit.

That would seem to be correct @Jefferson, really nice to introduce Amani to another young giraffe especially since she would at this age be helping to look after a few of them in a herd at her age. Also she will be hitting sexual maturity in a year or two years time so it’s great if she can get skills with young newborns. Unfortunately, for Mstari she never got that opportunity. Mstari has had a tough life, her great aunt dies when she is a few months to a year old and her mom dies when she is 2 or so, so great that she is good with her offspring.

There were previous talks of getting a new Giraffe, can't remember which gender, I think female, but what's the status of that happening still?

@cypher, the recommendation for Zoey from Columbus occurred just before the pandemic started. With all the time the border has been closed there has been no movement. I doubt that she is coming up now. They might consider another female for Kiko to breed with or the alternative might be looking at Calgary. Now let me make this perfectly clear I have not heard or seen anything that support this theory of mine but hear me out. Kiko isnt that valuable. Mstari is a genetic superstar as the number one female. Over in Calgary their male Nabo is pretty darn valuable and he is living with Carrie (an elderly retic), Moshi (his mixed daughter) and Emarah. Emarah has had 4 failed pregnancies with 2 different sires at 2 different locations. She struggles to bring a calf to term and when she has it has had a genetic defect. I wouldnt be surprised if they gave up on her despite her value. If that is the case then would it not make total sense to shift Kiko to Calgary and heck at this point take jr with him while bringing Nabo and his stellar genetics her to mix with Mstari and Amani who will be ready to breed in a year to two depending on her size. Eliminates a border issue. Pair up Kiko and Emarah and if they actually have a calf cool. Shes super high ranking too. And once Jr is old enough his superior genetics from Mstari could make him Calgary's breeding bull while Kiko serves as company for Moshi who will never be bred. Just a theory. I think it would be an even stronger possibility if Jr had been a girl but my theory makes a lot of sense to eliminate border issues while the pandemic continues and it will create superior calves.

Regardless since the last recommendation was in early 2020 they are probably in the middle of reassessing the Masai giraffe population now for a new SSP. Just need to wait and see if they agree with my idea or have other ideas for Canada. It wouldn't be bad to see a few more females arrive in Canada.

Interesting idea @TZFan. It'll be interesting to see how this progresses forward and how the plan changes.

@cypher it will be interesting indeed to see how our giraffe herds develop and change over time. We are really at a point where anything could happen at both zoos.

Oops. It was Cincinnati? Oh yeah it was. Just checked my notes. Thanks for the correction @Kifaru Bwana. Dont know why but I confuse those two zoos in my head all the time. Probably that they both start with C, are in Ohio and really great zoos. Regardless of where Zoey was from I still don't think she will be coming north. Likely will look at other choices in the upcoming SSP to find the right fit for Toronto. I could also see the SSP recommending sending Kiko and the baby boy to another Canadian zoo and just free up space for a new bull for Mstari and Amani.

Anyone knows currently how many Tanagers are in the Zoo?

Should be five species: Opal-rumped, Turquoise, Paradise, White-lined, and Silver-beaked.

As for individual numbers, I couldn't tell you. I have (probably) outdated numbers that say Opal-rumped and Turquoise should have 1.1, and every other species 1.0, which observationally I'd be inclined to think is correct but the birds are already so hard to spot, it's possible we got more recently, but we definitely had those species the last time I was at the zoo, which was a couple months ago.

I just saw the announcement that Matumaini/Little Long Legs/Baby Giraffe is being introduced to the public today!

Just in time for the March break week for students.

I know orangs Ramai and Budi have been getting along with each other pretty well, but ever since that, the zoo hasn't been providing updates on the orangs. @TZFan on the first page, you put "possibly Ramai at the end of the year" on confirmed pregnancies, which makes me confused on whether she is actually pregnant or not.

I assume shes not pregnant because if she was, then the zoo would already give us the news. If not, then I suggest moving Ramai to "Highly Likely Babies".
